    1. A player must have received First Team All-America recognition

    2. Ten years must have passed since last college game

    3. Post football record as a citizen is also weighed. He must have proven himself worthy as a citizen, carrying the ideals of football forward into his relations with his community and fellow man. Consideration may also be given for academic honors and whether or not the candidate earned a college degree.

    4. Players must have played their last year of college football within the last 50 years* and must be retired from professional football.

    5. A coach becomes eligible three years after retirement or immediately following retirement provided he is at least 70. Active coaches become eligible at 75. He must have been a head coach for a minimum of 10 years and coached at least 100 games with a .600 winning percentage*.

    * Players that do not comply with the 50-year rule and coaches that have not won 60% of their games may still be eligible for consideration by the Football Bowl Subdivision and Divisional Honors Review Committees, which examine unique cases.

Quick stories on some of the inductees:

Alvarez - was the target of QB John Reaves at Florida. Reaves set the all-time passing yardage record when Florida's defense "flopped" and allowed a TD late in the last game of the year, giving the ball back to Reaves to get more yards.

English - great player with the Lions in the NFL. Quit in mid career to manage his oil interests. Returned for a few more years.

Enyart - "Earthquake" rumbled briefly for the Buffalo Bills.

Lyons - part of NY Jet sack exchange with Gastineau and Klecko.

Scott - anything about him is must-reading. One of the best safeties ever. Never fair-caught a punt. Broke his wrist in 1971, then broke his other wrist in Super Bowl VI later that year. Said "I know who my friends are when I have to go to the bathroom."

Stephens - one of the first great black QBs in college. Those Minnesota teams were the first to integrate, also having Bobby Bell and Carl Eller.

Washington - good WR with the Vikings in the NFL.

Carr - probably also elected due to his longtime assistantship to Bo Schembechler.

DeBerry - great choice, invented the flexbone
