Bears 2011 projected starting offense: grades

    QB - Jay Cutler = B
His talent belies his stats with the Bears, but he did improve last year. Hopefully this year he will be able to read defenses more quickly and avoid some of the numerous sacks he took last year.

    HB - Matt Forte = A-
I thought Forte did really well when given the opportunity. Arguably the best player on Chicago's offense, perhaps Martz will find more ways to utilize Forte.

RB/TE - Chester Taylor, Kellen Davis, Brandon Manumaleuna = F
These guys are terrible. Davis is the only one with any potential.

    WR - Johnny Knox = C
Did well, but isn't a #1 WR. Drops too many balls, doesn't run good routes, and doesn't fight for the ball in traffic.

    WR - Devin Hester = F
Bears need to acquire a real WR for this spot. Have yet to figure out why the Bears don't use Hester as a 3rd down back instead of a starting WR.

    TE - Greg Olsen = C
Not much production from this dull player. Keep expecting a breakout season from the #1 pick.

    LT - JMarcus Webb = F
I can't imagine the Bears will start the season with Webb as their LT, but unless something develops...

    LG - Chris Williams = D
Another terrible player on the O-line. Only reason he gets a "D" is because he hasn't completely proven to be a bust at G, only OT.

    C - Olin Kreutz = D
Cannot block one-on-one, good for 2-3 penalties a game. Hanging on by a thread.

    RG - Roberto Garza = C
Probably the best O-lineman on the Bears, but thats like saying Knox is the best WR.

    RT - Gabe Carimi = B-
Hard to rate a rookie. He has ability, but I don't know how well he'll fit with the Mike Martz system, where both tackles need to be good pass blockers.

    K - Robbie Gould = A-
Reliable for the most part. Has done well kicking in a bad stadium.

Manumaleuna should just move to the OLine full time.

Miami tried this for a game or two, thinking his speed would be better utilized if they cut out the middle man. One of these games was the Peach Bowl vs. LSU, which I think was his last college game. They tried him out of the backfield on stretch plays, toss sweeps and a few swing passes. You're not gonna believe this, but he had no vision or awareness for the position, and repeatedly ran straight to the sideline.

I think at some point you just have to call a spade a spade with Hester and accept that he's not good at any position.

What's worse is, as bad a WR as he is. It's his best position by far. Not counting KR as a position.

Isn't this premature when you consider the quote-unquote "feeding frenzy" that's supposed to go on this weekend?

                  Racist.

But yeah, for years we saw guys line Mel Gray and Glyn Milburn strictly return kicks. Nobody was ever really sure what their "regular" postion was supposed to be. That should be Hester.

Hester should go back to returning kicks and punts, and use him as the dime back to save a roster spot. Every 6th DB in the league stinks anyway, and he'd see like a half dozen snaps per game.
