Chiefs 2011 projected starting defense: grades

Did the offense, gotta do the defense. I don't know if Senser was planning on doing more of these, but I encourage all of you to do your favorite team. I know it's early, but who fuckin cares. Just do it.

    DE - Glenn Dorsey - B
Will never be the player he was expected to be out of college, but that's fine. He has done a great job anchoring against the run in the 3-4.

    NT - Ron Edwards - C-
Good pass rusher for a nose, not good enough against the run. Needs to be replaced.

    DE - Allen Bailey - B-
Country strong. Eats raccoon, possum, and armadillo. Walks around shirtless with a dead gator slung over his shoulder back home on the tiny island off the coast of Georgia called Hog Hammock. He is a fantastic physical specimen. He seems pretty good at football too, but even if he's not, he's probably still better than that pansy Tyson Jackson.

    OLB - Tamba Hali - A
Dominated last year. Seemed to constantly give tackles fits. Not only did he rack up a lot of sacks, but an absurd amount of pressures as well. Rarely was taken out of the game or felt invisible. Uses his hands extremely well. He's a high motor guy, but he's black, which is a deadly combination.

    ILB - Derrick Johnson - B
DJ had a good year, and finally seems to be getting his shit together. He will never be a beast against the run, but he still has playmaking speed, and gets his hands on a lot of footballs in the passing game.

    ILB - Jovan Belcher - C+
Belcher is pretty good for a young, undersized, undrafted player. He plays hard. I like him. But, I think the Chiefs would be better off getting a thumper to stuff the run next to the speedy DJ, who is more of a finesse player. Belcher will have to make huge strides in order to keep his job beyond this year.

    OLB - Andy Studebaker/Justin Houston - B-
One of the best position battles on the roster with Mike Vrabel retiring (thank god). Studebaker has the experience, as well as some underrated, raw, physical ability. Houston has first round talent, and if his head is right, he could provide the pass rushing compliment the Chiefs need opposite Hali.

    CB - Brandon Flowers - B+
Tough, scrappy, physical, but undersized corner. If he's healthy, he's on his way to becoming one of the better young corners in the league.

    CB - Brandon Carr - B
He's solid. Stepped up last year when Flowers was down a little bit. Still has room to grow.

    FS - Kendrick Lewis - B-
Made a bigger impact on the defense than I thought he would last year as a rookie. Smart player, good ball skills, but lacks some speed. Helps to play with Eric Berry.

    SS - Eric Berry - B+
Hard to give him a higher grade than this after only one season, but he's a stud. Fearless, big hitter, fucks shit up in run support, and reminds you of Ed Reed after he gets the ball in his hands. Every INT he gets, he's trying to house it. I love that.

    P - Dustin Colquitt - B
Colquitt has always been a good punter.

The Chiefs defense had been really bad the past couple years. I think their improvement last year was one of the bigger surprises in the NFL. They have some high draft picks (Dorsey, Johnson, Berry) who were/are great athletes, so perhaps they will continue to play well this year.

Berry played really well last year, kinda got overshadowed by Suh going beastmode. I was looking forward to seeing him take a leap this season, but this lockout is hurting young players like him the most.

Yeah, they've done a good job drafting lately outside of the gigantic reach for Tyson Jackson. The '08 draft and last year's draft have yielded some impressive hauls. I think Justin Houston and Allen Bailey have the potential to be good players as well from this year's draft.

It's amazing how quickly building through the draft can yield positive results.

The coaches have done a great job with all the young players too.

Now if we just had a real nose tackle, the front 7 would look pretty damn good too. If Jerrell Powe ends up being that guy, the Chiefs will be set up incredibly well.

Feels good to be on the rise.

It really does lol. Even when we were good in the early 2000s our defense was still a shit stain on the underwear of the NFL. It's nice to be able to watch a decent defense in KC again.

Yeah, I grew up on the defensive teams of the 90's, so that's what I love to see. Arrowhead is always better when the defense is playing well. A defensive identity just fits the city and the people better than a flashy offense.

But I do like the balance the current team brings though.

Neil Smith with the beautiful follow through. Dale Carter looks scared to swing at an imaginary pitch.
