A shame...super talent...after he left Minny though, was a man without a home and found it hard to be motivated. Had a nice revival with New England for a bit, but again, Randy became Randy again...
Great player...never quite as good over his entire career as he should have been. We should be talking about how close he is to Rice in the All-Time Greatest list...but unfortunately, we aren't ever going to put those in the same sentence.Comment

Agreeing here with Larry. He should have had a greater career had he been more motivated and consistent. Still, he was maybe the most talented WR ever. And he had some AMAZING seasons, games, moments, plays, whatever...
So...first ballot? or.....sigpicComment

I always got the impression that Randy Moss played football because he made money and was good at it. It never seemed that Moss enjoyed playing football. So its not surprising to me that he retired.Comment

Good summation. Most likely a first-ballot HOFer, but still an unfulfilled talent...which is kind of weird. Hard to find a guy like him in NFL history with so much talent but also such an enigma. Bob "Boomer" Brown was an offensive tackle in the 1960's and early 70's. He was really good, eventually made the HOF, but he probably should have been one of the best (if not THE best) offensive tackles of all-time. Too Tall Jones was kind of like that too, but to a lesser degree.

A contemporary, Terrell Owens, I always got the opposite vibe, even though they were always clumped together...he (Owens) loved football and overachieved because of it, while Moss, considered a better player, underachieved.
Really weird player if you sit back and look at his career.Comment

Agreed. I would say that Moss had more talent than Rice but that Rice loved the game more and his work ethic is what made him the GOAT at WR.Comment

Damn, I'm going to miss him. Enjoyed watching him in his younger days with Culpepper. I remember everyone trying to imitate him. He's also brought one of the best football terms. "You just got Moss'd!"Comment

But, as great as Rice was, he also benefited from playing on the Niners, who were coming off an 18-1 Super Bowl season when they drafted him, and from having Montana and Young as his QBs. Moss was usually stuck on mediocre teams with questionable QBs. The year when he was on the Patriots and had Tom Brady at QB, Moss put up numbers that surpassed even Jerry Rice's.
I think if Rice had been drafted by Minnesota and had to catch passes from Tommy Kramer and Wade Wilson, he'd still be a HOFer but probably not have GOAT status.Comment
