A question about the HOF inductions last night.....

How the fuck did it take so long for Ed Sabol to get in?

He founded the company, NFL Films, that is basically the memory of generations of fans when they think about the NFL.

At least he got in and wasn't fucked over like Buck O'Neil was by the baseball HOF but it's amazing to me it took this long for Ed Sabol.

I think the Baseball Hall of Fame has separate induction categories for players, managers, owners, sportswriters, etc. The Pro Football Hall of Fame just lumps everyone together. You get 5 to 7 spots to fill each year, and then its a crapshoot. Its hard enough to compare a player like Jim Kelly to a coach like Hank Stram. They are two completely different things. Now add Ed Sabol to the mix, who wasn't a coach or owner, and how do you rank Ed Sabol against Kevin Greene?

That's definitely an area of needed improvement for the Pro Football HoF. There should be a non-player category that allows a worthy person to be inducted without reducing the spots allotted for players and coaches in a given year.

Kevin Green's crazy ass scream as a Ram doesn't get filmed if not for Ed Sabol.

In all honesty though Sabol was vastly more important to the game than Green was. I can think of the NFL and never once even think of Kevin Greene. Tough to think of the NFL without NFL Films.

But I do see your point.

NFL Films is as important to the NFL as Jim Thorpe or Joe Namath.

NFL Films gave fans access , encapsulated the moments , and was a constant gateway for fandom to grow and young fans to learn get interested.

No other sport has its history as accessible or visually storied as the NFL Ed Sabol and NFL Films is the reason for it long long long overdue.
Best reason to have a license.
