Those FOX college crews were the WORST. Barry Alvarez and Charles Davis.

I'm guessing FOX will have him do games close to wherever he's calling a college game.

Seems like they're trying to bolster their NCAA coverage instead of doing the 2nd/3rd best NFC game of the week for FOX. Which makes sense.

Still.. sucks not having Gus do 16 NFL games.

It's because they don't do games all year and then parachute in for the week.

It's the reason I hate watching baseball on national TV. Somebody like Orel Hershiser knows nothing about the Reds.

Eh.. disagree with this. At least in regards to the BCS matchups. Those games are announced at least a month before the game is actually played. PLENTY of time to do your homework on 2 teams...

My point though is that they don't do the homework.

Somebody like Charles Davis or Thom Bennaman do NFL games all year, then they show up the week of the game and go to a couple of production meetings.

Forgot where I heard it suggested once by someone, what would you think if they did this for the MLB playoffs?

You take one PBP guy from one of the teams and a color guy from the other and let them work the series. Not sure how you'd choose which PBP or color guy but it would help solve the problem of having shitty commentary because the guys don't know anything about the teams.

Yeah but I'd much rather have a true college crew doing those games, not a fucking pretender like Charles Davis.

Even his draft "analysis" on NFL Network shows you he knows next to nothing about college football. Plus it's not just the talent, it's also the production crews, directors, etc. who had no idea how to produce a college game either. Way different rhythm than an NFL game and FOX blew it every single time.

Interesting, but it's too hard for these guys not too root. The tension in those booths would be thick.

You know what I remember about those makeshift BCS crews? They actually used their crap NFC West 4PM matchups as "tune-ups" for those games. I remember Brennaman-Alvarez-Davis doing a Seahawks/Cardinals game and me wanting to slit my wrists.. it was so bad. Alvarez had no effin' clue what was going on.

But yeah, I agree with what you said. Although the first year they picked up the rights to every BCS game aside from the Rose Bowl.. their main crew was not an NFL crew - so they did have ample time to prepare for it. Which made FOX's BCS presentation that much worse. As NAHSTE touched on.. they botched so much of that.

ABC/ESPN is so much better at calling college games.. and I'm assuming that's why FOX decided to bring in Gus Johnson to bolster that part of their broadcasting.

As an aside, man I am a broadcasting geek. I can't believe I remember all this shit.

TBS for the most part did this last postseason. And it basically stunk. I think the only crew I enjoyed was the one where Don Orsillo worked with Buck Martinez (even though I am meh on Martinez).

TBS didn't take guys from the teams playing, if I remember right.

The best guy working for TBS during the playoffs was Ron Darling...by far. /nohomer
