Exclusive: UM Accuser Says Scandal Will Yield NCAA “Death Penalty”

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – Former University of Miami booster, and federal convict, Nevin Shapiro said his evidence will spark the NCAA’s most severe punishment that could bring about the end of football at the University of Miami.

In an exclusive interview with CBS4’s Jim Berry, Shapiro said the information the NCAA has in its possession is “going to be so detailed and to the truth that it will be impossible for any former players or current players to go around it.”

Shapiro said for the first time that not only was it players who sought favor with him, but also Hurricanes football staff was involved. According to Shapiro’s attorney, Maria Elena Perez, the information first came out under questioning by federal officials and bankruptcy trustee attorneys.

Shapiro is at the heart of an NCAA investigation and his involvement with the school dates back to 2001-2002. Shapiro’s attorney has claimed that he provided UM players with the use of a yacht and various other favors.

In the interview with Berry, Shapiro was tight-lipped waiting for more information to come out, possibly as soon as Tuesday evening. But, he did reveal who he thinks is at fault and some of the things he was able to do with the program.

BTW.. it SHOULD be more than USC. MUCH MUCH more. You're talking a span of 8 years with 72 athletes..

USC was ONE guy. (Two I guess if you want to count O.J. Mayo.. but USC felt that one coming and punished themselves for him)

I thought Ohio State should have set the precedent by the NCAA, but even then.. they will be dwarfed by these allegations against Miami.

Miami won't get a "death penalty" but considering this isn't their first offense, far from that actually, they are going to be straight up bitch slapped by the NCAA.. badly.

This sounds far worse than any Ohio State or USC penalty. Ohio State had around 8 players in one sport. USC had 2 players in 2 sports. Miami had over 70 players in 2 sports with clear connections to coaches.

Also, the statute of limitations only counts if someone's connections are only involved past the four years. In this case, a person has a nearly 9 year involvement so any investigation can include the full scope of his involvement (although the punishments would be slightly lessened because of the time lapsed).

I wouldn't say death penalty, but definitely worse than what USC has gotten and what OSU might get.

I gotta give this writer credit where credit is due.

This is the most damning piece of investigative journalism ever involving college football shenanigans.

The specifics...the details...the pictures...the receipts...the in-depth accounting analysis. As damning a piece of public record about a team as there ever has been.

The man did his home work.

They didn't have this much information on public record on SMU. They had a few kids come out, but this is a booster selling out every single thing he did, in great detail, over the course of 10 years AND HAS PLAYERS BACK UP HIS CLAIMS!

Damning...that is what this is. That is quality journalism...its just awful because it happens to this school.

The most badass part of this whole thing is that the AD at Miami for most of this, Paul Dee, left to become the head of the NCAA's Infractions Committee. He's no longer on it, but the song remains the same.
