Bumping this now that West Virginia has moved to the Big 12
Notre Dame to the ACC makes sense.

id have posted here instead of the WVU thread if i had seen this. But ill add a bit more the big10 is better for ND because of geography, football is better than acc, and they could still keep USC and not have toworry about fitting in the rivals from the big 10 and a chance at playing USC for a 2nd time in the rose bowl. basketball is not but it would still be more competitive for notre dame who would probably get trounced in the ACC, and with the big forming its hockey conference it would be a much better fit than playing in a conference containing schools all in new england.Comment

Notre Dame has always looked east as a school. Why would Notre Dame block itself in regionally when to recruit they need the East and southeast? Academically the ACC is a better fit as well. Olympic sport wise, ACC.Comment

In fact it makes the most sense.
The only rivalry that really means dick in the Big10 in the end is Michigan. Michigan State and Purdue don't really mean a hell of a lot.
I can tell you right now the only rivalries that Notre Dame really worries about preserving during a conference move are USC and Michigan. Michigan State would be nice to keep but won't be a hinderence in a move.
Notre Dame will gladly trade games against Michigan State and Purdue for games against FSU, Miami, Clemson, Wake, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Pitt and in recruting hot beds in the southeast, the carolina's, mid atlantic region(including Pennsylvania), etc. Notre Dame keeping their rivalry with USC helps keep them relevant out west. Mix in Stanford every once and a while(maybe alternate Stanford with Michigan every other year) and Notre Dame will be fine with the ACC.
If the Big10 told Michigan to drop ND they tell the Big10 to fuck themselves. Michigan and ND just had the biggest crowd in Michigan history this year and the last 3 games have been fantastic.
The ACC for ND makes a hell of a lot of sense for Notre Dame, football wise, basketball wise, academically, and olympic sport wise as well.Comment

Just looked it up, they talked back in 2003.
The ACC does a heck of a lot more for ND than the Big 12 would. Could the Big 12 happen? Sure. I just don't think it's likely and think it would be a huge mistake.Comment

i dont buy the footprint argument from notre dame. They are a national team which is a very small club already with michigan, USC, texas and possibly miami. Outside of playing weak opponents in football i don't see how it guarantees them talent out of florida where they would arguably be the 4th choice behind the big 3 there. you will have to explain your academic argument because the big has 11 members in the Association of american universities ( would have 12 but wisky and meechigan fucked nebraska)and has the largest endowment in the country and extensive cooperation between the 12 universities. hockey>> olympic sports.Comment

Then you aren't paying attention. You think Notre Dame is playing "home games" at Yankee Stadium, FedEx Field, San Antonio, etc for the hell of it? You think they scheduled Miami for fun? Hell ND is already scheduling games At Wake, "home" vs Maryland out there. They've done the UNC route. Ga Tech recently as well.
No one is saying it "guarantees" them anything but it can't hurt them expanding their recruiting grounds and footholds. A lot easier to recruit kids from Florida if you play down near them more. Look at what Kelly already has done with kids like Lynch, Tuitt, Rabasa, etc from that area.

Guess what Hockey Conference ND just agreed to join starting in 2013?
Hockey East. The best conference in America
Plus with high ranking soccer, lacrosse, volleyball etc teams that all fit in better with the ACC. ND is more than happy to play hockey out east where it's largest recruiting base is.
Everyone has this perception of Notre Dame as a "midwestern school" but they've always looked east. Always have. Seemingly always will. There largest fan bases are NY and Boston
Excellent article on the issue.
Notre Dame would love to be in an academic conference with the likes of Duke, BC, Wake Forest, etc. Top to bottom the ACC has tremendous scholastics.
The ACC is by far a better fit for ND and has MUCH more to offer than the Big 10 overall.Comment

I'm not sure on the specifics, but with the chance to add ND, I'm sure the ACC would gladly change that provision.Comment

As I've already said, Swafford the ACC commisioner as already stated that for any school to join they'd have to join in all sports. Hell even ratface (coach K) commented on this at the ACC's media day.
yea this would be true. Only way Notre Dame comes is if 1. they feel the Big East is no longer good enough to put the rest of their sports teams in or a very unlikely 2. another conference will let them join in everything cept for Football (which would be dumb)."It's the revenge of the dicks that's nine cocks that cock nines"Comment

That's changing soon....You think Notre Dame would join an eastern hockey conference if they weren't establishing recruiting bases out that direction?
