Tentative plan for Mizzou to join SEC

The Southeastern Conference and the University of Missouri have informally agreed that, barring new developments, the school will join the league and that Auburn University will move to the SEC East Division, according to two people familiar with the discussions.

A majority of presidents has endorsed the informal agreement, the sources said.

The league already plans to add Texas A&M as its 13th member, provided potential legal challenges from some remaining Big 12 members disappear. Missouri, also a member of the Big 12, would be the 14th member of the SEC.

A timetable for when Missouri would join the SEC, if the informal agreement becomes official, was not immediately known.

Earlier today, The Kansas City Star reported Missouri has an offer to join the SEC and that the league is willing to wait for an answer until the Big 12's future is decided.

I know it's not the worst part of this whole mega-conference situation, but the regions no longer mattering is a bit weird. I hope they change all these damned names soon.

Pacific no longer applies to the conference SC's in, UH isn't in the mountain area that the MWC title is supposed to apply to, TCU is in no way 'eastern,' Big Ten has 12, Big Twelve has ten...

Those last two are my least favorite, but at least the latter won't matter much longer as that conference seems to be on the way to folding "quicker than an over-caffeinated Origami artist" (something that one of the announcers on NFL 2K5/APF 2K8 always say)

Who really thought Kentucky was in the Southeast?

Kentucky and Missouri are on the same latitude and Missouri borders three SEC states. In terms of regions, the SEC could do a lot worse.

I suppose you are right. It's still really far away from some member schools and I doubt many people from Mizzou will attend those games. The natural rivalry with Arkansas should end up being pretty nice though.

Also, lets talk about what really matters...

Missouri originally passed an ordinance of secession during the Civil War, regardless of the events that followed. Therefore, they're automatically eligible for entrance into the SEC.

Maybe he's looking at them as prominent, semi-contender teams. Otherwise, I can't think of anything. I don't know of a history between the two, and they're certainly not close to being geographical rivals.
