How he is still employed is beyond me. I first noticed this twat when he made the worst call in NFL history, overturning a playoff-clinching INT by Steeler Troy Polamalu against the Colts. Over the years, I've seen him assigned to numerous Ravens-Steelers games, and when he's the ref these games end up being bloodbaths. He inexplicably was allowed to ref the NFC championship game a couple years ago (Saints-Vikes), and the game was marred by missed late hit penalties and bad calls.
Yesterday, Morelli's crew was clueless. Terrible officiating all the way around. The calls on turnover plays were ridiculous. The whole sequence of Jennings INT return was a joke...
1) Jennings is OBVIOUSLY down by contact. I kept waiting for the whistle to blow after Jennings got up and started to run. I think the players on both teams hesitated because they thought the play was over.
2) Moore makes a beeline to Stafford to try to take him out, but ends up getting his ass kicked instead. Stafford grabbing Moore by the helmet and flinging him to the ground is a pretty easy penalty call. But no call made.
3) At the end of the play, two Lions players drill Jennings when he is a good 2-3 steps out of bounds. No penalty call, no comment from the announcers, nothing.
4) Melee breaks out. Moore smashes into Stafford. Players from the Lions Defense are leaving the sidelines to enter the fray. Mayhem.
5) Things cool down. Morelli gets on the microphone to explain the outcome...and..."the Lions are challenging the ruling on the field"....thats it?! No mention of penalties? No mention of ejections? Not even a lame "off-setting penalties" call on Stafford & Moore?
6) When Morelli does address the issue...the call is personal foul and ejection of Moore. Huh? No late hit on Jennings out of bounds? No penalty on Stafford for the headlock toss and starting the whole thing? No ejections of the Lions players that ran in from the bench to join the fight?
