The championship game came about because the East and West divisions were drawn up. Otherwise, they would have just continued to award the championship to the team with the best regular season record.

You can't eliminate divisions and still host a championship game when the divisional alignment is literally the ONLY REASON (well, that and money/tv ratings) we have a championship game to begin with.

Essentially rankings aren't good enough to alone determine a NC or a NCG, but rankings alone are good enough to determine the game that leads to who plays in that game?!

Why do we need divisions if we are just gonna pick the two highest ranked teams at the end of the season?

And if we don't have divisions then, why do we need a championship game?
