Title Games and Conference Championships are determined BY THE CONFERENCES THEMSELVES...depending on the # of teams in the conference. They all have themselves different methods of determining the winner. The Pac12 now has a championship game and the championship game is played on the home field of the superior team. The SEC has a championship game, but played on a neutral site, as does the ACC. The Big East's champion is simply determined by the winner after a Round Robin season.

The conferences themselves generate their own title game...its not a CARTEL issue. The conferences set their divisional alignment up, if they have them, into some semblance that maintains the integrity of rivalries and regional affiliation.

To make it even worse, the loss wasn't even in the Big 12 CG. They lost to Colorado in the last game of the regular season. The rankings going into conf. championship week were #1 Miami, #2 LSU, #3 Texas, #4 Nebraska. Tennessee beat LSU, Colorado beat Texas. Miami crushed Nebraska.

And in 03 when OU played for the national title after losing to K-State 35-7 in the B12 title game.

Other way around. This was the year that Florida and Tennessee played at the end of the season due to the 9/11 postponement. Tennessee beat Florida (thanks to Darnell Dockett of FSU intentionally twisting the ankle of Earnest Graham a week earlier, causing Graham to miss the Tennessee game) and only had to win the SEC CG to get a title shot. Matt Mauck had other ideas though.
