Gill used a lot of his RSFreshmenssss this year...Kansas was simply not competitive at all.

On one hand, I feel bad for Gill. Guy was clearly in this thing for the long haul with Kansas, but damn, they just didn't even hang with anyone under Gill, plus, that administration there is a little FUBAR post Roy Williams, so...Gill never stood a chance, especially when he basically wanted a mulligan in his first few seasons as he built his team.

If I were a MAC or Sun Belt school or low end school, I'd immediately be on the phone with Gill. Clearly not ready for the big time, but he's a guy that commits to the program he's in...he made of all places BUFFALO respectable in the MAC.

Akron, if they can't land Tressel, should avoid guys with the connection to the program like Fickell (obviously not going there now, per Sportsbuck) or Paul Winters, should go after Gill. Maybe a Tulane or UAB or Memphis should go after Gill.

If I remember correctly, Gil was a pretty popular name right when he took the Kansas job. I don't understand the quick hook either- you've got to give him more time.

I hope the the Seahawks lose the rest of their games and Carroll gets fired and hired by UCLA.

        That would be glorious.

          For the record......

          It's WAZZU not Wazzou. Anyways...

Paul Wulff's decision is being announced tomorrow. If it was my decision I would say let him coach next year. But why?

          2008: 2-11
          2009: 1-11
          2010: 2-10
          2011: 4-8

Looking at his record it doesn't support that Wulff should stay with the program. Though, when you go beyond the record you can see this team is definitely improving.

This is PPG vs Opp PPG versus Pac-10 schools over the years.

As you can see, our offense hasn't scored this many points since about 2005, the Jerome Harrison, Alex Brink, and Brandon Gibson days. This was also done with the Cougs losing starting QB Jeff Tuel in the first game of the year, and having to play a 2nd and 3rd string QB the rest of the year.

No matter who we would have hired in 2008, Wazzu would have been garbage either way. Our 5-win team from 2007 was only competitive because of our offense. We lost to 4 Pac-10 teams by more than 25 points in Bill Doba's last year, with our wins coming from; San Diego State, Idaho, UCLA, Stanford (When they were terrible), and UW (lol).

The team was not competitive at all in 2008, we had 4 players on our roster with at least one other BCS offer. Four. We were lucky to have a 300 pound offensive lineman on the team, it was that bad. We had to switch from the 4-3 because there was no depth of defensive lineman, while shuffling through 5 different quarterbacks. Then in 2009 we led the nation in most starts lost to injury.

Take a look at the improvements made.

2008: 105th Passing, 107th Rushing, 119th Defense (Woooo not last!)
          2009: 104th Passing, 118th Rushing, 118th Defense
          2010: 56th Passing, 118th Rushing, 110th Defense
          2011: 7th Passing, 109th Rushing, 92nd Defense

Our passing game has improved phenomenally. The rushing game is slowly making improvements, but scoring 13 rushing td's vs 5, while being the 7th best passing team in the nation is outstanding. Wazzu's defense still has ways to go, but they have improved from giving up over 43 points per game, to just over 31 in 2011.

Now, what is even more incredible is looking at the Cougars depth chart, freshmen and sophomores occupy 24 of the 44 spots on Washington State’s two-deep depth chart.

The days are long gone of losing 69-0 at home, Cougars have enough talent to win 8-10 games next season. One more year.

Honestly, I have no idea what will happen.

Our AD, Bill Moos, is the same person who turned Oregon into a contender. He is the reason Phil Knight got on board with the school. He has stated many times he wants us to break the "underdog" mentality that Wazzu has always had. Hiring a big name coach (Leach, Peterson) will certainly make a splash and show our program is done fucking around.

He still thinks highly of Wulff, though. WSU's President has been pressuring Moos on the decision. I can see either decision happening. They realize Wulff has turned this program around, or that 4 wins just isn't enough, even during a complete rebuild of a program.

Sad to see Wulff go, but I understand the decision.

If Wazzu is really serious about breaking the loser mentality, then hiring Mike Leach would be huge. I would have no problems with that hire, other than questioning his ability to recruit players to Pullman, as he doesn't have any northwest ties.

I am sure that is the 100th job on Leach's wish list. Sorry, taters. I think Wazzu should have given Wulff one more shot, it's not like they have a guarantee that they'll upgrade. It will be very hard to find someone with credibility and a name who would actually want that jerb.

Mike Martz is rumored to be a candidate for Arizona State and UCLA. Martz was an assistant at ASU for 8 years from 83-91.

He's concerned that Wazzu will turn into a school that will replace coaches every four years. Either by being fired or leaving for a better job somewhere else. Wulff is a former Coug and his dream job is Washington State so he is a upset.

He also said if he could go back he would only take the job again if he was guaranteed 5 years, which he didn't get. He really believes the team is capable of 8-9 wins next season.
