Cam Newton Tells Panthers to "Get on His Level"

Cam Newton has exceeded expectations this season, but Carolina continues to serve as easy prey for opponents, something the rookie QB says he simply can't accept.

Twelve games into his startling rookie campaign, Cam Newton has developed a zero-tolerance policy for losing. If Carolina was looking for a company man -- some meek figurehead -- its quarterback has only brought fire.

In his first national interview in months, Newton didn't shy away from sending a strongly worded message to the Panthers.

“What happens when you take a lion out of the safari and try to take him to your place of residence and make him a house pet? ... It ain’t going to happen,” Newton told ESPN this week.

"That's the type of person that I am. I'm that lion. The house that I’m in is somewhat of a tarnished house where losing is accepted. But I’m trying to change that, whether I'm going to have to turn that house into a safari or I'm just going to have to get out of that house.”

Newton took a moment to clarify: "I'm not trying to leave this place. I'm just trying to get everybody on my level."

Bold words from a rookie, which might be interpreted the wrong way by some, but Cam is no regular first-year quarterback.

He is, by all accounts, a lion.

I've always respected the guy, probably now more-so than ever. You need people like this to turn a culture around.

I agree with his stance. Nothing wrong with calling it like it is, no need to be fucking PC about it.

              I don't like those quotes.

Newton is the belle of the ball right now, but the fact remains that he is a results business, and the team has 4 wins. He's a rookie this year, so he gets a pass for that, everyone is happy to just see him play well, but if they're 4-8 again next year, as the QB, he better be ready to hear the critics. And when he does, 'well, my teammates aren't on my level' isn't going to fly as an excuse.

That's not the attitude he has, having watched all of his post game interviews not once did I see him put any blame on anyone besides himself. He doesn't even look angry after a loss, always just one mean word from crying. And if it means anything, most of his team mates seem to be behind him, specifically Steve Smith.

I have no issue with Newton, I have issues with those quotes. He needs to be more careful about how he conveys himself. I get what he is saying, but it comes off badly.

I really don't get this media approach some athletes take. If you're serious about this statement then just bring up it to the team in the locker room. What's the point of doing it publicly like this?

He needs to tell the defense to get to his level. Allowing 27 points per game is ridiculous...that's two touchdowns PER GAME more than the league-leading Niners defense. And despite that, five of their eight losses come by seven points or less.

What's the difference between Cam Newton and Barack Obama?

Agreed, except if Newton's already done that, and they aren't responding. I know that they've lost two key players on defense, but that is still no excuse for losing a bunch of games by just a touchdown.

Its problems on on the D side with the best player and defensive leader (Jon Beason) on that team injured they are a bit lost.

I think they would of been about a .500 team if beason was around

As if he would be worthy of your praises if he was winning
