Ohio St. gets 1 year bowl ban

An important distinction to be made between Ohio St. and USC and the 'LOIC' charge is the fact that USC's case concerned multiple sports (Football, basketball, and I believe one or two others) with similar instances happening, whereas Ohio State's was concentrated on one sport only.
As well, the level of cooperation a school has with the NCAA plays a large role in how the whole process is handled, for example take a look at the NCAA recent rulings with LSU and Georgia Tech. USC stonewalled the NCAA from the get-go, whereas Ohio State self-reported the original Tat 5 violations upon the FBI's notification, self-reported Tressel's cover-up and other violations that were uncovered, and cooperated fully with the investigation from the get-go.Comment

Quadruple post here, but I just wanted to say that really, but my anger isn't directed at the sanctions that we received from the NCAA, but rather at our idiotic AD Gene Smith. Based on the case, I think the sanctions are just fine. If not for the repeat violator rule I would disagree considering what we were charged with, but given that we were considering a repeat violator they are fine.
The man talked all along about how a bowl ban is not likely because of precedent and blah blah blah, well turns out he only went back to 2007 researching precedent while the NCAA went back to 2002.
The independent research firm that tOSU consulted about self-imposing sanctions suggested a 6 scholarship reduction over 3 years, 4 years of probation, and a 1 year bowl ban. Gene decided that not only did we not need a bowl ban, but that reducing the probation and scholarships would be a good idea as well. Those 'in the know', say that if he had imposed a bowl ban for this year, the NCAA wouldn't have added on to it.
Gordon Gee and Gene Smith are fucking clowns. I will give Gee credit because he's an oustanding fundraiser and because of him this University has taken major steps forward academically, but the way they handled this entire ordeal from start to finish just proved how inadequate they were for this University.Comment

I'm confused about the outrage from USC fans. You had a player basically getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, either through gifts or otherwise, the coach and the AD tried to deny it/cover it up and Bush lied to the investigators about it. For bettr for worse at tOSU players didn't take nearly as much money, were pretty cooperative with the NCAA etc. Both head coaches and AD's are sleeze balls but I can see where the NCAA drew the line.
Jim Tressel? AMPLE proof he knew and he was the main person covering all this up.
So how is one program absolutely hammered for something one player did without all the key people in the program knowing (and maybe I'm naive but I really believe Pete Carroll didn't know until it was too late) .. while the other gets a little slap on the wrist and won't make a bowl game in 2012 for something far worse in the grand scheme of things.
This is what I, and so many others hate about the NCAA. There is absolutely NO consistency in any of their rulings when it comes to this sort of thing.Originally posted by ram29jacksonI already said months ago that Seattle wasn't winning any SBComment

It's simple.. Pete Carroll, as much as you want to suspect he knew about what Bush was doing, was never tied to any of it. It was all speculation from fans/media.

I'm just pointing out the obvious and well-known here, but USC football really got screwed over by the NCAA no matter how you want to look at it.Comment

Pretty minimal sentence to a program that has been dirty since the beginning. They're losing a lot of money though in revenue.FromThisSeat.com

How did Ohio State get off easy the first time? Because they were never penalized. Players were selling tickets/memorabilia as far back as 2002, yet nothing was ever done. Clarett had use of a fleet of motor vehicles and was given summer jobs of watering the artificial turf, yet the NCAA did nothing. Your specious claim that Clarett repeatedly "lied" would be similar to someone who still doubts Jose Canseco's steroid claims AFTER all this evidence has come to light. For someone such as yourself to still think that Clarett was "lying" about Ohio State's transgressions, you must truly have your head in the sand.Comment

Maurice Clarett.
The memorabilia for cash scam was in place shortly after Tressel's arrival. 28 former players have been found to have participated, and undoubtedly there are several dozen more.
Troy Smith taking cash from boosters.
Need I go on? And this doesn't even take into account that Tressel's program at Youngstown State was equally dirty.Comment

Ohio State's basketball program was even dirtier than its football program. The most recent spate of football rule-breaking at Ohio State overlapped with probation remaining from when the men's basketball program committed major violations under then-coach Jim O'Brien in 2004.
Do you have any idea of what you are talking about?Comment

How did he repeatedly cover up violations? He never self-reported any of the violations, as mandated by the NCAA. You REALLY need to brush up on your NCAA rules and regulations if you are going to continue to comment on issues such as these.

If he didn't know about those other instances, then how could he possibly have reported them?

Just an FYI though, Ohio State was not on probation from the basketball rule-breaking when this stuff all went down. That probation was in effect from March of 2006 through March of 2009.Comment

I liked him a ton when he was here and I respected his reasons for leaving. Now I think it was all bullshit, and once he figures out how to recruit well up north he will be at Notre Dame as soon as he can.
He's a liar and full of shit.Comment
