Could LSU lose to Alabama in the National Championship and still be #1?

Lets say LSU beats Georgia this week. That means they will have beaten 8 ranked opponents. This includes 4 on the road and 2 at a neutral site. Then they go into the National Championship against Alabama and lose a close game. IMO their body of work may be better than Alabamas who have beat 4 ranked teams and lost to LSU.

They would both have losses to each other. I don't know if Alabama would deserve to be national champion if they squeek one out against LSU in the ship.

Isn't the national champion technically voted on after the 'National Championship' game between #1 and #2?

Edit: I guess I should have written could Alabama win and not be national champion. Not that LSU would still be #1.

Bored in class and thinking about it. Don't see how if Alabama wins a squeeker that they would deserve to be #1. Just hypothetical.

There could be a split vote I guess..But I doubt it. The winner of that BCS game automatically gets the AP vote/BCS championship. I guess the coaches poll could still award it to LSU if they wanted to.

Depends on how the game goes. If it finishes 9-6 in OT .... wouldn't you have to split the title? LOL.

This is why a rematch will be terrible and proves nothing. If Alabama wins, it's a split, and quite frankly, LSU is probably the better team. If LSU wins, well, it just means they beat Alabama twice and we still don't know if they would have beaten Oklahoma St or whoever else. It sucks for LSU to be forced to beat a team they already defeated in the so-called "season long playoff" (L-O-L).

A rematch sucks for everyone besides Alabama fans, and I shudder at the thought of having to listen to those mouth breathing cretins should Alabama manage to win.

I doubt the cartel allows a split title.

If Alabama beats LSU in the BCS National Championshp game won't they be considered National Champions? All of this split stuff won't matter.

The only poll tied to the BCS is the Coaches Poll.

The AP Poll still votes on it's own.

Technically there could be a split.

                  Edit.

                  Apologies.

                  I had it reversed.

                  It's now correct.

I'm all for a split, as it further makes this entire system look foolish.

                    Go Bama' (sorry NASHTE)

A split doesn't reflect poorly on the BCS so much because the AP poll isn't part of the BCS anyway.

Yes, but I'm talking about the enire polls, voting, BCS, bias, no playoff, etc system.

I think it would just for the fact that the BCS was created so there woul dbe no more split titles. That there woul dbe more definition in who the champion is. A split title would blow the biggest part of that mission statement up. A split title based on a poll the BCS used to use..and the other major poll in the land would reflect really poorly on how well the BCS was doing in determining who the best team in the land is.

Not saying that a rematch is the "right thing" or anything, just pointing out that the BCS accomplished its intended purpose.
                            Disagree.

What happened when LSU and USC split? I really don't remember which makes me think no one actually cared.
