49ers to Franchise Dashon Goldson Today

The franchise tags are flying and it looks like one will land on 49ers safety Dashon Goldson.

Adam Schefter of ESPN and Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee are both reporting that Goldson will be tagged by the 49ers on Friday. If the 49ers keep the tag on Goldson instead of signing him to a long-term deal, he will receive around $6.2 million for the 2012 season. The 49ers were interested in signing Goldson to a long-term deal last year, but he passed on a five-year, $25 million contract and wound up signing a one-year deal with the team.

Goldson is coming off a very strong season for the Niners. He had 67 tackles and six interceptions in the regular season and added another pick in San Francisco’s playoff win against the Saints.

With Ahmad Brooks signed and Goldson tagged, the 49ers can move on to their other free agents. Quarterback Alex Smith is at the front of that list with cornerback Carlos Rogers not too far behind. Both of their positions carry a larger salary for franchise tags, something that might have impacted the 49ers’ approach to dealing with so many moving parts.

Good to see we're doing our best to keep all of our defensive pieces in place. With Brooks and Goldson on board, all we're missing is Rogers, who could potentially be replaced by a guy in the draft...although I would prefer that they signed Rogers, and drafted a cornerback.

i hope the niners can keep rogers around, he was a huge part of the success of the secondary. more depth is needed at the position tho and I'd like to see that addressed in the draft

I'm curious as to how good the 49ers pass defense really will be without Carlos Rogers in the secondary. He was darn close to shut down last season.

i really think rogers made goldson and whitner look better than they are and allowed them to focus on either getting the pick or stopping the run.

Ideally what I would love is to see us snatch up Wallace by giving up our first rounder, re-sign Rogers and Smith, then bring in a cornerback in either the 2nd or 3rd round.

If argue that the front 7 actually made the secondary look a lot better. I think Rodgers declines this season.

Odd how Goldson rejected the 49ers 5 year deal last year, he probably thought they were going to suck again and wanted out but didn't get a deal fr anyone else as good?
