Officers found a "madhouse of people" drinking and congregating outside a home, enjoying the warm night, he said.

"It was a nice night, they were drinking, they're having a loud time, which is the reason we're there."

As officers approached, five or six people hopped a fence and led police on a chase, Trent said. The officers caught up with the group and used their hands to corral them, but Rees "actively resisted," Trent said.

"It wasn't terribly violent, but it was enough to be considered resisting," he said.

One officer suffered a minor scrap and "had the wind knocked out of him" while trying to stop the group, Trent said.

Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees has been arrested and jailed on a preliminary felony charge after a confrontation with officers who were trying to break up a house party off campus early Thursday, police said.

Rees, 19, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement, felony battery to law enforcement, minor consumption and public intoxication, according to police.

South Bend police had received a call about a loud party at about 12:30 a.m. on Notre Dame Avenue, an off-campus area that is home to many Notre Dame students, South Bend police Capt. Phil Trent said.

One officer suffered a minor scrape and "had the wind knocked out of him" while trying to stop the group, Trent said. Rees lifted a knee into that officer, Trent said. Rees also was pepper-sprayed while on the ground, police said.

Police also arrested Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese, 21, on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. He was released after posting $150 bond. Rees had a blood alcohol content of .11 and Calabrese a .12, according to police.

Rees, of Lake Bluff, was being held without bond until the county prosecutor's office decided on formal charges, police said. A spokeswoman said prosecutors received the police report mid-morning Thursday and were reviewing it to determine charges. Prosecutors have 48 hours to charge someone in custody.

If charges are not filed until Thursday afternoon, Rees may not be arraigned until noon CT on Friday.

A Notre Dame football spokesman did not have immediate comment from Irish coach Brian Kelly, but word from Kelly is expected sometime Thursday. Kelly is in South Bend after out-of-town trips to speak to alumni groups on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rees and Calabrese almost certainly will enter into the university's student disciplinary process, and there could be additional sanctions imposed by either the school or Kelly as a result. Notre Dame's disciplinary process can run concurrently with the legal process; the school doesn't have to wait for the courts to determine any further consequences.

“The university is aware of this incident and is confident that it will be handled in a prompt and professional manner through the criminal justice system,” Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown said in a statement. “Internal discipline is handled privately, in accord with our own policies and federal law.”

Perhaps working in Rees' favor is recent university precedent that effectively let Kelly determine discipline for wide receiver Michael Floyd, whose March 2011 arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence precipitated an indefinite suspension handed down by Kelly but no missed games during the 2011 season.

Still, strictly from a football perspective, Rees' arrest infuses even more commotion and uncertainty into a four-way battle for the starting quarterback position this fall.

Rees is the incumbent, starting the final 12 games of the 2011 season as well as four games as a freshman in 2010. But Kelly reopened the competition during the team's 15 official spring workouts and did not choose a starter following the team's spring game on April 21, with Rees anything but assured of taking the first snap Sept. 1 against Navy in Dublin.

Kelly emphasized that the battle would continue through the voluntary summer workout session and the early stages of preseason camp in August.

As for the possibility of Rees being barred from summer workouts and therefore falling farther behind his competitors? Though the cases are different, Floyd participated in summer 2011 workouts while still indefinitely suspended -- with Notre Dame's reasoning being that coaches, by NCAA rule, can't monitor those workouts or control who shows up or doesn't.

Calabrese served primarily as a backup linebacker in 2011, playing every game after starting eight games as a sophomore in 2010. According to police, Calabrese attempted to "intervene on behalf of Rees" during the incident and told officers, "My people will get you."

Members of a crowd witnessing the incident then pulled Calabrese back, according to police, but Calabrese then broke free and repeated the "My people will get you" comment and subsequently was arrested.

Nah. Rees was a kid who made a drunken stupid mistake. As much as I hate Rees as a football player...He's always been a good kid from everything I've heard. Panic'd dumb decision but still some humor coming out of it.

Clausen was/is an assbag.
