Brian Dawkins: Andy Reid belongs on hot seat

Brian Dawkins retired as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles family last month.

He’s considered one of the best defensive players in the history of the franchise.

And Dawkins believes Andy Reid deserves to be on the hot seat entering this season, a spot no one disputes the veteran coach is on.

“Yes, here's the thing,” Dawkins said on NFL.com’s Cover-2 podcast, according to the Philadelphia Daily News. “When you go out and you get some of the pieces that they got. That's telling the fan base something. Even coming into this year ... some of the things they're doing this offseason, that's telling the fan base something. You then have to show ... what are you as a coach.”

In fact, Dawkins believes if the Eagles are going to do anything with the group they have, it will happen in 2012.

“This is the year to me that says … if there was a chance for this team go far it should be this year,” he said. “You should know your team, you should know who can do what.”

Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo is entering his second season in that role. Expectations are he will be much better and his personnel has been upgraded. Wide receiver DeSean Jackson is paid and happy. Ditto running back LeSean McCoy. No one is calling it a Dream Team this season. But the Eagles, who won their final four regular-season games, are in position to compete in the NFC East.

Yes, his job should be at stake this year.

I would say he's on the hot seat after the turd of a season he served up last year. If he needs to win a championship to get an extension, it's not looking good with Vick at QB...

The NFC east is just full of hot seats isnt it.

Chances are Andy Reid and/or Jason Garrett will no longer be Head Coaches in 2013 so some wishes do come true.
Best reason to have a license.

Not knowing much about the inner workings of the Eagles organization and their owner, I'll just assume the Eagles will need to get into the playoffs and maybe even win a game for Reid to retain the job.

I think they have to win a playoff game, or Reid is done. No more BS, it is time for them to get back into the playoffs and make some noise.

I believe Reid has all the job security in the world and this is silly. I feel like we hear this every time Reid has an 8-8 season. I highly doubt Reid is on the hot seat. He probably has among the most job security in the league.

Eagles don't have a QB to compete at the level they hope to in 2012. So, Reid will probably be fired by year's end.

Barring a disaster of season, they would be fools to fire Reid. In a league where the ebb & flow of winning and losing is super fragile, his teams have been consistently good since 2000.

The ebb and flow is fragile, but NFL mediocrity is a cycle that remains firm. Consistently good in the NFL is mediocre, of which, the Eagles have essentially been since they drafted McNabb.

If you aren't winning a championship (and they aren't with Reid and Vick) you might as well be the #1 overall pick.

Since they went to the Super Bowl in 2004, they have won at least one playoff game in just two seasons since.

With that said, yes, Reid is consistent. They've had just 1 losing season since his first with the club. But how many years without a playoff win can they go (it's been about 4 I think)?

FWIW I always felt Jim Johnson had more to do with that success than Reid.

Similar to Tom Coughlin, Andy Reid is on the hot seat every year. Just another case of Mike Vick/Coach Killer.

You know the saying, "You don't know what you have until it's gone?"

If they don't start getting closer to championships, they will get upset, fire him, hire a new guy, and fall apart. Only then will they realize that they were consistently decent.
