Yeah, because they sabotaged the investigation. Penn State PD pulled the original psychologist off the case who said Sandusky had pedo tendencies, and replaced him with a guy who gave a non-criminal report. The DA cited the psychoanalsysis as the main obstacle in pressing charges.

That second psychologist worked for Penn State as an independent contractor for 5 more years after that.

The D.A. also came up missing and is presumed dead, from what I recall.

        That makes lots of sense.
The NCAA really doesn't need to get involved with what can and will be handled in civil and criminal court.

Joe Pa allowed children's lives to be ruined, who was at Penn State for X years and won X # of games.
Jay is just trying to rationalize things so that he can sleep at night and live with himself knowing full well that his father and idol fucked up royally. Hard to blame him, but yea, saying this shit on ESPN helps no one.

I suspect early on that the idea was to bury all of this after the 1998 investigation (hence the "shocking" retirement of Sandusky), but Sandusky was such a brazen, serial offender that everything eventually spiraled out of control.

The serious lack of judgement was allowing Sandusky to keep hanging around, and then showing a complete loss of good judgement when he was still allowed to hang around after the 2001 incident. The longer it went, the deeper the shit they all knew they were in, so, well, they kept it going.

Paterno probably figured early on that it was best for all parties for this thing to just quietly go away. And to be honest, that investigation in 1998 didn't net a single charge, so I don't have a major problem with that. The problem, is instead of just forcing Sandusky out, they should have shunned him from the campus, and that was the major failure here. Everything that happened after fell into "save your own ass" territory, deeper and deeper each passing year, and is obviously inexcusable.
IIRC didn't they determine the Sandusky "retirement" in 1998 pre-date the original 1998 incident? I thought they report found no indication that the 1998 incident had anything to do with Paterno telling Sandusky that the wouldn't be the next coach.

Again too many people are looking at only Sandusky and not the numerous other NCAA compliance issues. Look beyond the child rape and look at the way student-athlete crimes were reported, thrown away, under reported, handled internally, etc. This report isn't just centered on the Sandusky issue but rather the whole power structure of Penn State.

They committed numerous NCAA compliance issues and thus can be punished by the NCAA.

It's sad that more people are freaking out about Joe Paterno than Pope John Paul II - a pedophile's dream enabler. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely abhor Paterno now ... but why Catholic popes, in particular JP2, get away with what they've gotten away with is beyond me.

NCAA boss open to PSU death penalty

Emmert said he's "never seen anything as egregious as this in terms of just overall conduct and behavior inside a university." He added, "What the appropriate penalties are, if there are determinations of violations, we'll have to decide."
                          Not an NCAA issue!!1

I'm guessing you don't follow the news very much, strange for a reporter. But people cared a shit ton about the Catholic Church scandal and still bring it up even though Catholic Priests had a lower rate of molestation than the general public. It was a huge deal and lead to some of the highest ranking members of the Catholic Church in America being charged, sued, or otherwise disposed of.

Either way, people are freaking out about JoePa because it is recent. But I find it sad that you aren't freaking out more for 9/11 and Pearl Harbor than about JoePa and the Catholic Church if you want to bring up historical tragedies.
