All-America cornerback Tyrann Mathieu plans to enroll at LSU on Tuesday for the fall semester, Mathieu's adoptive father confirmed to The Advocate on Monday afternoon. Mathieu's plans to enroll were first reported by WVUE-TV in New Orleans and ESPN.
Mathieu will not play football for the Tigers this season and it's unclear whether he will ever play for them again. After being kicked off the team Aug. 10 reportedly for failing multiple drug tests, Mathieu checked into a drug treatment facility in Houston in an attempt to get his life in order before resuming his academic or athletic career.
The deadline for enrolling at LSU for fall semester was supposed to have been last Wednesday, but the university was closed for three days due to Hurricane Isaac and the deadline was pushed back to this Wednesday.
Mathieu's scholarship was taken away when he was dismissed from the team and he presumably will be paying his own way this semester. LSU officials haven't speculated on whether Mathieu might return to the team in 2013.
The Tigers played their first game without Mathieu, a Heisman Trophy finalist a year ago, when they defeated North Texas 41-14 last Saturday in Tiger Stadium. Freshman Jalen Mills played well as Mathieu's place at cornerback and wide receiver Odell Beckham replaced Mathieu on punt returns and had a 70-yard runback for a second-quarter touchdown.
