People are trying to attack W2B by pointing out the child molestation, but in terms of sports, that isn't the part you should be focusing on. Instead, it should be the recruiting and lack of reporting by the Penn State athletic department of crimes within the department, not just by Sandusky but also by many athletes.

If Penn State hadn't covered up Sandusky, they wouldn't have had nearly the recruiting that they had during the last 14 years. This was a decision ingrained in sports, if not, why would they even ask JoePa his opinion on whether or not to report the crimes?

But this goes to an even deeper problem with Penn State and that was the underreporting of crimes within the Athletic Department. JoePa had hold over his team so much that Student Affairs could not touch his players, regardless of any crimes they committed as students. This control was flexed during the Sandusky situation, but this allowed JoePa to have players commit crimes without being suspended a single down from the football team. In this case, they were placing being a good player over being a good citizen.

In both cases, players were seeing the field even though they shouldn't have. However, in the case of Penn State, the image of the university and the football program was allowed to continue its facade for 14 years.
I respectfully disagree with the bold. To me that's conjecture and my feeling is PSU would have been business as usual, with Sandusky being painted a villain, and the train moving along. Paterno would have been lauded as an even bigger hero, too.

    Good post.

      Good post.

This thing would be a small blemish on penn state if it were released 14 years ago.

UNC has been doing this stuff reportedly for 15+ years now and is involving most of the sports programs. Supposedly academic advisers were steering student athletes to these classes and majors.

How is this not an ESPNs home page?

I obviously agree with W2B, but I wouldn't use the word "more offensive" when looking at the NC and PSU situations purely from a sports standpoint.

However, NC's discretions do violate particular NCAA by laws, where as Penn State's sanctions were handed down because the NCAA saw it as a violation to an NCAA code of ethical coduct which is vague and questionable in relation to what happened at PSU.

NC should get a similar punishment because they are multiple offenders, it possibly stretches across two sports within the program, and the players that were involved in those classes would of been ineligible to play. Of course the NCAA probably won't because they won't be pressured into doing so, and NC won't pay $6mill to a former FBI director to perform a thorough investigation and hand the NCAA a perverbial bat to bash them in the head with. I'm sure they won't make it as easy as PSU did.

every arguement on vsn turns into a battle of semantics.

                      w2b stance is obvious.

                      UNC-only about sports

PSU-not about sports but involved sports people.

this UNC stuff has been going on a couple years anyway as far as the investigation was concerned right ?

                        no surprise, nothing new.

I said 2 years ago..no program was in the top 40 unless you were cheating some how/some way.

I dont know if it was here or not but at least 3 sites told me i was nuts...are people really this stupid?

it all just depends on the NCAA And when they lay the hammer down and if they feel they can benefit from busting you because they know every single program is up to something bad...

As long as they eliminate the UNC Basketball program I'll be happy.
