    Dolphins starting Tannehill against Carolina

The Miami Dolphins will start rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill on Friday night against the Carolina Panthers, a team source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Tannehill got the nod over Matt Moore, who started last week's preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The eighth overall pick out of Texas A&M, Tannehill was impressive against the Buccaneers, completing 14-of-21 passes for 167 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown to tight end Charles Clay in the third quarter for Miami's only score in a 20-7 loss.

First-year coach Joe Philbin had previously indicated that Tannehill would start at some point during the preseason. Philbin also has said he would like to name his starter for the regular season before the third preseason game.

David Garrard was listed atop the Dolphins' quarterback depth chart early in training camp but he is expected to be out for up to a month following knee surgery.

He's the best QB on their roster.

So far it seems safe to say that he's exceeded the expectations of what most people had of him coming out of college. I believe most people thought he wasn't ready and would sit for at least the first 8 games to a full season.
