For the Colts, their perspective is that their 2013 2nd round pick is Vontae Davis. Their FO must feel more secure about that than bringing in a rookie.
Colts Trade 2nd Rounder for Vontae Davis

1. I said yesterday this was the rumor going around.
2. Yes, we're losing DEPTH right now, but honestly, Vontae has been a problem ever since he came here. He has been lazy, sometimes argumentative, late for meetings, and has a big mouth on and off the field. For those watching Hard Knocks you can see it first hand there that it is still going on. Him and Sean Smith were buddies since being drafted together, but Smith "has got it" finally, that you can't screw off and have to put in the work. Vontae obviously hasn't. He also gets a lot of PI and holding calls and simply isn't progressing to the elite corner Miami expected. It's a shame really. Getting the 2nd rounder back for him now is a fantastic trade. He isn't going to change in Miami...time to move on.
3. Ireland has said that with this trade, and the Marshall pick, things are not out of the question for Miami to make another trade soon (guess is for a #1 WR) (Wallace??).Comment

Interesting trade.
For multiple reasons, first being when Polian and Co. were running the show we probalby would have never seen something like this. CB is a legitimate need for Indianapolis right now and Polian would have waited until next year or used little to nothing to trade for a project. from what I understand Davis has some maturity issues but I've also been hearing he's glad to get out of Miami.
Secondly I think this shows the difference in opinion on the fundamental issue of player size. Davis is probably one of the bigger CB's Indianapolis has had in the last decade, and the only one who comes to mind as being nearly as physical is Marlin Jackson.
Funny that when we ran the Cover 2 we would search for undersized CB's and now we're actually picking up big boys.Comment

some maturity issues? Hopefully he doesn't show up to practice on Saturday, the day before a game, drunk, like he did last year before our KC game.

The Colts began shopping for ways to address their need. Early last week the team began searching for a way to plug that leaky hole in the defense. And knowing that Vontae Davis had lost his starting job in Miami, the Colts called asking to acquire him.
The Colts' first offer was a sixth-round pick.
Miami general manager Jeff Ireland, who had not been shopping Davis, told the Colts he was not interested.
By Thursday, the offer was improved to a fifth-round pick. Ireland still had no interest in that price for a player he views as troubled but still worthy of keeping given his age, ability, relatively cheap cost and the first-round investment he had in Davis.
So the Colts let that sit for a while.
And Saturday the Colts came back again -- this time offering a third-round pick for Davis. I have to give Indianapolis GM Ryan Grigson credit for persistence. He latched on to the idea of getting Davis like a pitbull locks down on a steak and didn't let go. And, of course, while he was showing little interest in the offers, Miami GM Jeff Ireland was not saying, "Stop calling me!"
Ireland was open to the idea of trading Davis, but at a price he wanted. That goes back to the Bill Parcells school of thought that "Everybody is on the trade block all the time." (For the right price).
The third-round offer got Ireland's attention in that serious, serious negotiations began to take place between the teams. The Colts were finally in the ballpark but Ireland wanted more. And the fact they were in the ballpark encouraged the Colts they might be able to solve their gaping defensive problem. It also encouraged Ireland that he could get a premium draft pick in this deal.
It was sometime late Saturday or early Sunday when Grigson came back with the second-round offer. The offer put Ireland on the hook but to reel him in, Grigson had to add the conditional sixth-rounder that he ultimately included in the deal.Comment

I can see the immaturity that has been talked about when referring to Vontae Davis. Just watched tonight's episode of Hard Knocks and when Jeff Ireland was telling Davis about the trade he looked...quite simply - like a child. He wanted to immediately call his grandmother the moment he was told and Ireland had to talk him down a bit and really get him to focus.Maddon & Friedman: Pissing off the AL East since 2008
