It seems Donovan McNabb's playing days are over ... TMZ has learned the quarterback has inked a deal to join the NFL Network as a broadcaster.

TMZ spoke with McNabb's rep Mark Lepselter who confirms McNabb has officially signed on ... adding, "He is going to be a part of their 'Playbook' show, as well as other platforms on the network."

We're told McNabb will tape the show in both New Jersey and Los Angeles.

Lepselter says Donovan is serious about his new gig ... telling us, "[Broadcasting] is something that he is going to devote 100% of his attention to."

"With that said, he does have some other areas in his life that he wants to pursue in this next phase ... business interests ... real estate in particular."

McNabb had a helluva 12-year career on the field -- starting with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999 and ending with the Minnesota Vikings in 2011.

what do you think when you think of McNabb? i kind of think of him as over rated. someone who played on very good teams and couldnt get them over the hump. yes he got them to a SB but the final 5 mins of the 4th quarter kind of summed up his career to me

getting the Eagles to the SB was his highlight. altho; i cannot totally blame McNabb.
they played those MFing Pats, lol.
they had a shot at the end but came up short..........it happens. plus, Reid shackled him up too, IMO.
then
injuries plagued him after, especially with the Redskins

anyway; he is doing what everyone else would do at this point by continuing a career in the NFL.....just off the field

I love how everyone brings this bullshit up, good teams but never took them over the hump. The guy had Torrance Small, Charles Johnson, Chad Lewis, Greg Lewis, Freddie Mitchell, Todd Pinkston, James Thrash and Na Brown before TO even showed up in 2004. That's 5 years of quite possibly the worst WR lineup a QB who has thrown for over 30,000 yards ever faced! The fact that he kept the chains movin before TO showed up and the 2 years after he left was a miracle. Drafting DJax, Maclin, Celek and McCoy extended his Philly career, but every QB requires weapons. The fact that the numbers he put up w/o having weapons of the same caliber for his first 5 years should give him plenty of credit.

Sure the Defense was great those years, but it wasn't like they were catching the ball from McNabb, hell most of the times Staley and Westbrook were catching the passes.

Call him good, maybe not great but can we please quit calling him overrated. The man did a good job for almost 11 years before time caught up to his body, that's a pretty decent amount of time he was good.

I saw him throw a pass to Nick Jonas in that celebrity pro-am flag football game thing and he was short on it by a yard or 2. No pads, no rush, just short.

He was a good QB for a long time. The iggles should have built an offense around him. If you notice that teams with great QBs stack up on offense because it is rare to have one of these Elite qbs. You need to take advantage of the opportunity while it lasts before you are stuck with a Quincy Carter for 3 years....

McNabb had some pretty shitty receiving cores over the years and no real running game. Brian Westbrook was the best player on a lot of those teams but overall the offensive talent was marginal. McNabb, along with Westbrook, was the reason the Eagles offense was so good over the years. Just because he didnt win the big one doesnt make him overrated. A lot of QBs wouldnt have done shit with the talent he had to work with for as long as he did.

fwiw, concerning "winning the big one", Eli Manning has won two Super Bowls, and I don't think he's a significantly better player than McNabb. One guy had a WR catch a hail mary against his head, the other didn't.

Up until about 2008, I liked his HOF odds. Now, not so much. Bad end to a decent career. You can knock him all you want, but not many QBs have been to five conference finals.
