    USF: Trouble on the horizon?

South Florida's athletic director Doug Woolard was careful with his words earlier this week when he released a statement regarding Skip Holtz's status as the team's head coach.

Chair for the BOT is voicing his displeasure. His letter to the President of the University, Judy Genshaft, expressed the same sentiment I had when we lost to Temple. He called it "disgusting and unacceptable." Plus, AD Doug Woolard was very non-committal to Skip's future in a statement released earlier in the week. It all sounds like Skip is going to need a huge turnaround to keep his job.

Leavitt needed to go after what he did to Joel Miller, but, Skip needed to continue to grow the inroads we made in recruiting. We were starting to pluck some kids away from the "Big Three" in this state and that has really dropped off. OC Todd Fitch was finally able to snag a top-recruit in Asiantii Woulard and then we lost to Ball State and Temple...I would not be shocked if he backs off that verbal he gave us.

IF the university fires Skip, I think there are some candidates that would do very well here:

Sylvester Croom - No nonsense guy who was COY in SEC in 2007 and did it the right way. He blew up MSU and got the right kids in the program and kicked some of the best players off the team for off-field issues (gun related charges, etc.). Shows that the guy has character and can win the right way.

Mario Cristobal - Pedigree. Experienced success as a player at Miami and has done impressive work while at FIU.

Kirby Smart - I would love him heading up our program. Fact is, we may not be a big enough job for him.

Al Borges - As an OC, the guy has found success wherever he has gone. He knows how to work with the pieces he has at the moment and build from there.

USF has always been a paper champion in my mind. They've never done well in the Big East conference, and they've gotten killed as of late. Their success was mainly due to the amount of non-conference games they could schedule, and they would stack up wins against the Woffords and FIUs and then end up with 7 wins and a bowl spot. I think their non-conference schedule has gotten much more difficult, and their play in the Big East hasn't gotten any better, so I don't know where people expect the USF wins to come from.

Not only did he punch Joel Miller, he tried to cover it up and also used intimidation to do it. His termination was warranted. Great coach, but he fucked up and had to pay the price for it.

They've played well against OOC opponents who, at the time, were nationally ranked programs or solid teams: Auburn, Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida, Miami, FSU, Clemson. They always played well against West Virginia as well. The rest of the Big East...meh.

Who in the fuck is "Joel Miller"...I'd punch him in his smug face, too. They essentially put a budding young program back in the dumpster over some nobody.

I have a silly little personal anecdote of Leavitt.

I cut a deal to cater for all Rutgers football opponents during that era, and usually when we would deliver the meal, some goofball graduate assistant or traveling secretary would hand us a check for the food, and then a few bucks for the delivery guys to split up (usually between $50 or $100).

When South Florida came to town, Leavitt himself paid the bill, which looking back, im sure was some sort of NCAA violation. Anyway, he pulls a gigantic wad of cash out of his pocket, and mumbles "how much". He demands to see an itemized receipt, looks it over, and proceeds to haggle over the price, which was already discounted pretty heavily to begin with since I was willing to take a hit on these enormous sales. So anyway, he hands me several $100 bills, and asks for change. I inform him I don't have coins on me, figuring he won't care anyway because he's going to hand half of the change back anyway for the delivery guys. Nope. He rolls his eyes, says "fine, fine", counts his money, and walks away.
