NFL players vote on most overrated

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Tim Tebow's time on the bench has changed the perception of him among his peers.

Five months after being named one of the top 100 players in the NFL, the New York Jets' backup quarterback was voted the most overrated player in the league -- in a landslide -- based on a Sports Illustrated poll released this week.

A total of 180 players voted in the survey, with 34 percent naming Tebow. How's this for a twist? Jets starter Mark Sanchez finished tied for second, receiving eight percent of the votes. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo also got eight percent.

At least Tebow can say he's ahead of Sanchez in one category.

It's remarkable how quickly things change in the NFL. In May, the NFL Network released its player poll of the top 100, with Tebow in the No. 95 spot. He was coming off a playoff appearance with the Denver Broncos, whom he rallied from a 1-4 start.

Tebow was traded to New York, where he has yet to play a significant role on offense -- only 55 total snaps. He has made most of his important plays on special teams, as the personal protector on the punt team. Running twice and throwing once with Tebow as the up-back, the Jets are 3-for-3 on fake punts.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick finished fourth on the list with 4 percent of the players' votes, while Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis (3 percent) was fifth.

Not everyone in the NFL makes 7 figures. The article only mentioned 180 guys were polled, who knows what their status in the league was.

I think he's better than a lot of the backup QBs around... The only difference being that you have to tailor your offense around him the way Denver did in order for him to succeed.

It's hard to keep him as a backup though because the fans and media are going to hype him no matter what role you try and squeeze him in and Tebow has shown a tendency to get swept up in that at times and say some things that can be detremenal to the team as far as his playing time. I can see why a lot of teams would just pass on a distraction like that.

Go watch Broke... The locker room atmosphere is extremely competitive. Even if these guys aren't gorging themselves with what the media is saying, they have people in their ears who are letting them know.

If anything, Tebow in underrated. People act as if he's a complete joke, when in reality he'd be a very useful additon on any NFL roster.

Tebow won this poll because of the outrageous media attention he receives. Glen is right on the money.

I also see the large negative in the media fan fare about him and what he says. Does anyone think that it's a positive for the NYJ to have this constant QB drama in the media? Course not. Certainly no good for Sanchez to have this constantly up his ass.

He's terribly inaccurate for the NFL level (sub 50%) and fumbles more than he should be (once per start in Denver). His mechanics are poor and this is who he is. He won't improve from here, this is all you're going to get as far as I can see.

I get all that.. But all things being equal I'd rather see him trotting onto the field than I Caleb Hanie.

At least he presents some semblance of hope that things are going to turn around. I would have bet if he is the Jags backup last week instead of Chad Henne they hold onto that lead and win the game.

I just don't see a ton of second string QBs around the league have proven themselves to be demonstrably better quarterbacks than Tebow. Better throwers maybe, but not better QBs.
