Lions Trade For WR Mike Thomas

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded receiver Mike Thomas to the Detroit Lions for an undisclosed draft pick.

Thomas signed a three-year extension worth $18 million last October. The deal includes $9 million guaranteed.

The Jaguars get a mid-round draft pick, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The trade makes sense for both sides.

The Lions (3-4) lost receiver Nate Burleson for the season last week, so Thomas gives them depth behind Calvin Johnson, Titus Young and rookie Ryan Broyles.

And the Jaguars (1-6) get a draft pick for a player who clearly has fallen out of favor with a new coaching staff. First-round draft pick Justin Blackmon and second-year pro Cecil Shorts III passed Thomas on the depth chart, and the Jaguars recently stripped him of his role as punt returner.

Thomas has 13 receptions for 80 yards this season.

Not sure about this one. He looked like he had promise but he's fallen off the Earth this past year. That's a lot of money too...I guess Robiskie isn't working out.

I don't know why you'd laugh. If they gave up a 5th round pick or so he's likely better than anyone they'd draft at that slot

Kevin is right he is probably better than anyone drafted in that slot, but they are paying 10x more than a player drafted at that spot.

Not a good move to me. Broyles has looked fine so far in the #3 role and I don't really want Thomas to over take him. We've really got 5 solid receivers if you include Scheffler and Pettigrew. Not to mention Stafford had his best game of the season on Sunday. I think we would've been fine with what we had. We rarely go 4 wide with all receivers, usually have a TE in the slot or something.

Apparently we only owe him 1.45 million a year or something because the Jags gave him most of the money.

It remains to be seen if it's lol worthy. That's a lot of money for a 4th wr though. How much playing time will he even get? Do you sacrifice the rookies development to play him more?

Seems unnecessary with Titus Young and Ryan Broyles.

I didn't think WR was the Lions problem so this obviously makes no sense.

Thomas is a good body to have. He's had problems with drops but god damn can he be dangerous out of the slot. I hope JAX gets a decent pick for him.

I know reports are out that we're looking for a veteran safety since Delmas & Spievey (both our starting safeties) are out. Certainly wasn't expecting a WR.

Vikings and Lions can share the cellar this year....no issues with that here.
