Cruz close to extension with the Giants

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz said Tuesday that a structure is in place for a contract extension.

"From what I hear, they've just agreed on the structure right now," Cruz said Tuesday during an appearance on WFAN radio. "And that's all I'm at liberty to say."

Cruz, 25, is making $540,000 in the final season of his current contract. He said last week that his preference is to secure a new deal before the season ends. If that doesn't happen, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Cruz was an undrafted rookie out of UMass in 2010, playing five games without making a catch. But he was one of the NFL's breakthrough players of 2011, with 82 receptions for nine touchdowns and a franchise-record 1,536 yards. He made a touchdown catch in the Giants' victory over New England in Super Bowl XLVI.

Good deal for the Giants, bad news for the rest of the NFC East. Also, you've got to respect him for not pushing a hold out during the off-season, either.

When you are a player of Cruz's status it is easy to not holdout, because given his contract status and place in the league the Giants had to give him an extension. Either way Cruz comes across as a likeable guy who seems to "get it", so good for him.
