Something I just realized about Joe Theismann

He's not in the Hall of Fame.

For some odd reason my entire football life I had never really looked into it but for some reason assumed he was.

    Just kind of weird.

Lawrence Taylor made sure that he wouldn't be.

Is Theismann HOF worthy? I always thought about the Redskins teams of his era being more smash mouth run oriented types.

Not really. I can't explain it but he has always come off as a big name and one that I thought was in. But he's not. Can't really explain it.

Theismann is a legend in his own mind.

Fucking hated Theismann as the color guy. And didn't he legally change the pronunciation of his name to rhyme with Heisman? Queer.

Yeah, I actually had to look this up a few years ago, because I thought he was a HOFer as well. I don't know what it is, but Theismann has always been one of those football names that I just associated with the HOF. I'm not sure why, but I did.

Incorrect. An "urban sports myth" if you will to some degree.

I have heard him tell the story on a talkshow before, and he says he did change the pronunciation before his Senior year with the permission of his mother/grandmother. But he could just be feeding the myth at this point, he's kind of a blowhard like that.

                      I'll expound on this:

The ND SID at the time(Theismann's freshman year) mispronounced the name to a news reporter when Theismann came in as a freshman and the guy was doing a story on the team. The reporter basically did a story with the pronunciation key that the SID said(Theisman like Heisman..not really intending to pump him up for future greatness just giving a pronunciation hint) and when in a few years he had gotten really good the national media picked up on it and ND/Theismann ran with it like it's what they intended all along when it was really just an innocuous pronunciation comment to a reporter years earlier when Theismann was a nobody.

                      Dumb luck really.

Theismann has said when he goes back home to Jersey he is still called "Theesman" by his friends and family(I think he came clean on the issue in some NFL Network show)

Actually here's an ND piece on it from ironically a few days ago.

One would be safe to assume Theismann's career was probably over before LT came into the picture, it was 1985 the dude was 36 and had 8 TD's to 16 INT's, comp % of 55 and a QB rating of 59.

LT did that man a favor, put him out his mother fucking misery.

They were, but the offense Gibbs ran was the Air Coryell, which was mixing the run with playaction down the field. The running game was the key component, but its amazing that the Redskins won each Super Bowl with a different QB- Theismann, Doug Williams and Mark Rypien.

As for Theismann, you can credit the change in pronunciation for people thinking he's more important than he was. He did finish second in the Heisman race, he did win an OPOY award, but he was a good QB, certainly not great though.

Pretty sure he played for South River High School in New Jersey.

I have an uncle who at every family function would always retell the tale of how...."I sacked Joe THEESMAN once in high school. Damn near ended his career."
