Raiders talking to Gruden about return

Former NFL coach Jon Gruden is in talks to return to the Oakland Raiders, Pro Football Weekly reported on Tuesday.

The report comes a day after the current coach, Dennis Allen, left the team to attend the funeral of his father who died Monday.

Early in November, Raiders owner Mark Davis voiced his frustration with the team, which is 3-9 after losing five in a row. In the past week, reports have surfaced about the Allen's job being in jeopardy after one season.

Gruden was probably the most liked coach of the Raiders since Tom Flores retired in 1987. Gruden coached in Oakland from 1998-2001, compiling a 38-26 record after working as the receivers coach for Andy Reid with the Philadelphia Eagles.

He left Oakland in 2002 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which he guided to a Super Bowl victory over the Raiders that season. He was traded to the Bucs by late owner Al Davis for two first-round draft picks, two second-round picks and $8 million.

Gruden was fired by the Bucs after the 2008 season after producing only two more playoff trips. He has a 95-81 career head-coaching record.

In 2009, Gruden joined ESPN as a color analyst for Monday Night Football as well as various football specials. He has been sought for a number of coaching positions since then, including the University of Tennessee job, which he publicly turned down last week.

You don't hire a coach like Allen and expect Year One results- he's got to grow with the team, and a lot of the first year is learning on the fly. It would be an absolute waste of a season to can Allen after one year, even if they bring Gruden back.

I love Jon Gruden. I wasn't exactly sold on Allen, I mean 3 years as a secondary coach in New Orleans and 1 year as a DC and then he's a head coach? Jon Gruden is my all time favorite head coach and if we can get him back then definitely, if not then stick it out with Allen and see what he can do.

I still don't think the Raiders should have fired the Cable Guy. Not to mention they seem like they have a new head coach every season now so this doesn't surprise me. I love Chucky though, prob my favorite head coach as well but I hope he doesn't go back to Oakland.

Good to see Mark is just as patient and willing to develop a winner over time as his dad was..

I don't know why it's on Dennis Allen that he didn't have a pick until round 4 this year because the Raiders HAD to have BOTH Terrelle Pryor and Carson Palmer last season. I don't know if Allen is the right man for the job or not but you have to give he and McKenzie a couple years to bring in their own guys.

Agree 110%, especially if you don't even give the guy a draft pick until that late. It's taken the Redskins this long to turn things around because the team before Allen and Shanahan kept dealing picks and had no depth. That's the big key to creating a winner, being able to draft well.
