Ravens Fire Cam Cameron, Replaced With Jim Caldwell

The Baltimore Ravens dismissed offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell.

The Baltimore Ravens on Monday dismissed offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and replaced him with quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell.

Cameron's dismissal comes after the Ravens' 31-28 overtime loss to the Redskins on Sunday, their second straight defeat.

"My charge -- our responsibility as a coaching staff -- is to maximize the opportunities for our team to win, and we can still reach all of our goals for this season," coach John Harbaugh said in a statement announcing the move.

Harbaugh called Monday's decision "the hardest thing I've ever had to do as a coach."
"There is a very human side to this," he said. "Cam is my friend, he taught me a lot about coaching, and he is an outstanding coach.

But in making the move, Harbaugh said he was doing what was best for his team.

"It's not about fair or unfair, right or wrong," he said. "We need a change. Our plan and our goals are to win games, win our division and get to the playoffs."

The Baltimore Sun, crediting unnamed sources, cited the Ravens' inconsistency on offense and quarterback Joe Flacco's development, of which the team hasn't seen significant progress.

Flacco is scheduled to be a free agent after this season.

After scoring 21 points in the first half Sunday, the offense's first four drives of the second half ended with Flacco's fumble, his interception deep in Washington's territory and two three-and-outs.

"We kind of stopped ourselves today," Flacco, who completed 16 of 21 passes for 182 yards and three first-half TD passes, said Sunday.

The Ravens (9-4) lead the AFC North by two games over Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Baltimore is ranked 18th in total offense this season.

Cameron joined the Ravens in 2008 after he was fired as coach of the Dolphins following a 1-15 season.

Caldwell was hired by the Ravens after being fired by the Colts after Indianapolis' 2-14 season in 2011.

Before taking over as head coach at Indianapolis, Caldwell spent seven seasons as the team's quarterbacks coach. Under his direction, Peyton Manning won three NFL MVP awards. In 2004, Indianapolis went 12-4 behind Manning, who threw for a career-high 49 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.

I don't think Cam was the one preventing Flacco from improving, but we shall see. Maybe someone can teach Flacco about pocket awareness.

Caldwells offense is gonna look a shit ton different. Maybe we see a dramatic increase in carries for our boy Ray Rice from Rutgers RAWR!

So let me get this straight.

A team that was 9-2 until losing the last two games with a fairly decimated defense (who got beat by charlie batch) and an avg. QB who is labelled "elite" for some ungodly reason fired their OC because somehow magically he's the issue...

Good. Perfect timing because now Ray Rice will lead my fantasy team to a championship.

This has been a long time coming, there's been plenty of games over the last few years where you have no clue why they are calling the plays they are.

Cam Cameron was maybe the worst OC in the league. This move needed to happen.

I'm blinded to this because I've watched way to many philly games this year.

LOL at Griffen being an average QB. The guy plays smart, and doesn't turn the ball over. Don't see what there isn't to like about the guy, especially from the player who leagues the NFL currently in QB rating.

As for Cameron, I know Ravens fans have not been happy with him for this season and last. However, the one thing that didn't do poorly yesterday was the Ravens offense, and so they go out and fire him anyway? Blame the defense for not being healthy, and I can't even blame the special teams that much for the Crawford return because that guy has essentially rode the bench and had fresh legs. It's the wrong week to fire Cameron, in my opinion.

NFL Front Offices are a fucking joke. Fired for losing two games? Shouldn't it be results based, do they expect the Ravens, without 3 defensive starters to go undefeated?

I think Flacco was the QB he was referring to.

I don't watch enough Ravens games, but it certainly sounded like from pretty much all of my Raven fan friends that his play calling even in wins was extremely suspect (scoreboard wise, they did squeak out a lot of wins with what sounded like some questionable decisions -- i.e. Rice getting 10 carries or something when he's averaging 6 ypc)

                            Pretty sure he means Flacco.
