Earlier this month, we discussed the possibilities of Colts coach Chuck Pagano, coming off his chemotherapy treatments for leukemia, returning to the sidelines for Week 17. On Thursday, the Indianapolis Star reported that Pagano has been cleared to return right on time.
"Medically, he's 99 percent recovered from my standpoint," Pagano's doctor, Larry Cripe, told the paper. "I have placed him on no restrictions."
It's up to Pagano when he wants to return. Interim coach Bruce Arians has indicated he hopes Pagano can return next Monday and take over the head coaching duties for the regular-season finale.
"He's working out, doing well, eating well, buffing up," Cripe said. "You've got to look good on that sideline, right?"
Very true.
After his leukemia diagnosis that was announced on Oct. 1, Pagano has made sporadic appearances around the team. That included a passionate postgame speech last month just before it was announced that Pagano's cancer was in remission.
Obviously, all of this is great news. And it'll be interesting to see what kind of emotional lift Pagano can provide as the Colts head toward a possible playoff berth. But even better than that, Pagano is healthy. For that, the organization can be truly thankful.
