Robert Griffin III has partial tears of ACL and LCL, MRI suggests

The MRI exam of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s right knee suggested that Griffin has suffered partial tears of his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, according to several people with knowledge of the test results.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.

It was not immediately clear whether surgery would be required or how long Griffin would be sidelined if the partial ligament tears are determined to be fresh injuries. Griffin suffered a torn ACL in the same knee in 2009 while he was in college at Baylor, and has been playing in recent weeks with a mild sprain of the LCL.

One person with knowledge of the situation said Griffin might have to undergo exploratory surgery to determine the extent of the damage and whether the injuries are new. Another said Griffin hopes to avoid full-blown reconstructive surgery if the tears are partial, even if they are new injuries.

A third person familiar with the case, asked whether the ligament damage is new or a matter of previous injuries showing up on Griffin’s MRI, said: “That’s what we’re trying to find out.”

Shanahan said at his news conference Monday at Redskins Park that he didn’t know the extent of the damage to Griffin’s knee or how long it will take the quarterback, who just completed his rookie season, to recover. Shanahan said it was unclear whether Griffin will play in the Pro Bowl, to which he was elected, or be ready to participate in the team’s offseason workouts and practices.

Griffin underwent an MRI exam after his knee buckled in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 24-14 playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks at FedEx Field and he left the field for good. Shanahan said the results of that exam are open to interpretation because of Griffin’s previous injuries.

They just said the Richmond report has been retracted but doesn't change Shanahans comments.

The way his knee buckled inside of the brace last night during the last fumble looked really bad so it wouldn't surprise me if this was true.

Shanahan is going to have a hard time living this one down.

Even though I'm an Eagles' fan, this sucks. RG3 is fun to watch and good for the game.

You know, it was upsetting that Shanahan didn't pull Griffin at the half. The offense did nothing after those scoring drives, the defense held until the fourth came along, and some sustained drives and a score could have made a huge difference. Regardless, your franchise player was hurting, clearly not 100% and playing on a field in terrible condition with a knee injury. Once he aggravated it again, he should have been done.

But the thing is, I don't get why people are talking about Griffin in the sense that it's his fault. Not any of the current posters in this thread, but this knee injury was the result of a collision with Haloti Ngata. He started to go down, got caught up with another player and his knee whipped around and collided with Ngata. This wasn't like the guy refused to go out of bounds and cut it up field. It's not like he refused to slide and took a helmet hit to the head. It wasn't going to be avoided on that play.

What happened in the game Sunday night though, that was certainly avoidable.

I don't blame Griffin. He's a warrior and wanted to play an important game. I blame Shanahan. It was obvious RG3 wasn't RG3. After you build that 14-0 lead, you protect your franchise and say to Griffin "thanks for what you've done" and give Cousins enough snaps to get comfortable.

Shanahan was also the guy who had the balls to give up all those draft picks for RG3, so it's hard to just say "you're fired, motherfucker" ... but if I'm Dan Snyder, it's tough not to say goodbye to Mike Shanahan.

If RG3's injury is career-affecting like Robert Edwards was with the Pats, I want Shanahan the fuck out of Washington.

The NFL is gonna miss RG3 like crazy. Here's hoping he has an Adrian Peterson-like recovery (in every game not involving the Eagles).

The NFL is a better league with him.
