CBS' Jason La Canfora reports the Jets will "explore" Darrelle Revis' trade market.

According to La Canfora, owner Woody Johnson has "strong reservations" about the team's ability to extend Revis beyond the final year of his contract next season, and wants to "attempt to land value for Revis now, rather than risk losing him" in free agency. It's a sign the Jets are dead serious about rebuilding and addressing their cap issues, but it would be strange timing to trade Revis, as he's coming off a torn ACL. Selling low on your best player isn't recommended in any sport. However, a clause in Revis' contract bars the Jets from using the franchise tag, so the danger of losing him next winter is real. Even coming off a major knee injury, interest in Revis should be robust if he's truly made available.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Green Bay show some interest in him as well. We're expected to allow Charles Woodson to walk, and could use another playmaker in the defensive backfield. That's probably just wishful thinking, but I'd love to see it lol.

On a more realistic note, barring someone ponying up a king's ransom, you can probably eliminate any AFC team from these potential sweepstakes.

If the Jet are seriously contemplating it, I'll imagine an NFC giving up a 1st round pick and maybe a mid-rounder? Judging acceptable compensation for the guy coming off ACL surgery, tough.

Agreed, not with him coming off an ACL surgery. Every executive is going to lowball the Jets, and they'll end up keeping Revis, as they believe he is arguably one of the top defenders in the NFL. No shame in looking to see what you can get, but don't make a move just to make one.

If RGIII was healthy, I could see them consider it. Not sure if it would still happen, but it's worth a look for sure.

Our good friend and CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora stirred things up quite a bit when he reported on Inside the NFL the Jets are open to the idea of trading all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis. Unsurprisingly, La Canfora's first appearance replacing new Cleveland Browns executive Mike Lombardi on the show was excellent, as expected.

Also unsurprisingly: Rex Ryan reportedly doesn't want to trade Revis. And it sure doesn't sound like Revis wants to get traded either. The cornerback noted Thursday on Twitter he was "speechless" at the notion of getting traded.


Revis had previously tweeted "SPEECHLESS!" but then deleted that tweet and fired out a more thoughtful response. It's a smart move because it brings the fans into play. And no Jets fan wants the team to trade Revis. Ryan definitely doesn't but also didn't completely rule it out when speaking to the media Thursday.

"I'm not going to get into any of those specifics right now. Let's let the process run its course," Ryan said. "I'm confident that any decision made by this organization without question will be in the best interest of the team."

But the problem is, Revis can't be franchise tagged, the Jets are strapped for cash with respect to the salary cap and Revis, even coming off an ACL tear, is gonna want to be paid like a quarterback when his contract voids after 2013.

The Jets can deny the report as much as they like and could ultimately end up keeping Revis, especially if there's no one out there willing to trade for him.

Jets owner Woody Johnson sort of denied the rumors, saying: "I don't know where that came from. But in the 10 years I've been talking to you guys, I've never made comments about contracts and stuff."

The issue with acquiring Revis via trade is that a team would have to pay twice for him; once by giving up draft picks to the Jets and twice by handing him a monster contract.

It's going to be a closely-watched situation into the offseason and probably through part of next season, especially if the Jets start slow.

@ralaw- that would be nice move. There are some really good qbs in the draft this season and some really good value guys. His name slips my name but NC States qb is climbing up the draft boards

As a Bucs fan, ill say the position is under appreciated, in Tampa at least. If we had 2 half decent defenders on the back end we would have won 3-4 more games.
