Ray Lewis Reportedly Used Banned Substance

The good news is that linebacker Ray Lewis may not be facing many questions about a 13-year-old controversy during media day. The bad news is that there’s a fresh topic into which the assembled reporters will want to delve when Lewis and the Ravens gather at the Superdome for the annual exercise in journalistic hysteria.

According to Sports Illustrated, Lewis contacted a company owned by a former male stripper to obtain a deer-antler velvet extract after tearing his triceps in October.

Mitch Ross of S.W.A.T.S reportedly videotaped the phone call from Lewis.

“Spray on my elbow every two hours?” Lewis asked Ross regarding the extract, via Philly.com. (Quotes from the conversation don’t appear in the free online version of the Sports Illustrated article; presumably, Philly.com gleaned the info from the full article.)

“No,” Ross said. “Under your tongue.”

Later, Lewis asked Ross to “just pile me up and just send me everything you got, because I got to get back on this this week.”

The problem for Lewis is that the extract contains IGF-1, which is on the NFL’s list of banned substances. For the NFL, the problem is that Lewis will retire after Sunday. So there’s really nothing that can be done — unless Lewis admits to it on Tuesday and the league puts the investigative process into the highest gear possible.

Even then, it’s impossible that the matter would progress through all available appeals before Sunday night.

Crazy how ESPN has already offered him a job, I wonder if this will change his employment status with the network. One could never imagine Bonds or McGwire getting a gig on Baseball Tonight. And those guys don't even have the whole obstruction of justice/accessory to murder thing hanging over their heads.

Bonds and McGwire play baseball.........Lewis plays football. Who really cares?

                  FWIW

"Two years ago, it was the same report. I wouldn't give that report or him any of my press. He's not worthy of that. Next question," Lewis said.

He also said he doesn't want to give the company any publicity and questioned why he should respond to such "stupidity."

"Ray has been randomly tested for banned substances and has never failed a test. We have never been notified of a failed test. He has never been notified of a failed test," Kevin Byrne, vice president of communications for the Ravens, told ESPN.

The Ravens had a meeting with Lewis on Tuesday morning to discuss the article.

"He denied using the substance discussed in the article and we believe him," Byrne told ESPN.

Right, the double standard is puzzling. Might just be that baseball writers are self-important dweebs.

They have him on tape, so unless you believe he ordered it and then never used it, its pretty obvious Lewis is lying.

I'm sure half the people on the field Sunday are cheating. I don't care, you will never stop these guys from cheating, but hopefully they harass Lewis about this until kickoff and beyond, because he's a creep and deserves whatever scrutiny he gets to counter act this bullshit image he's created.

Mitch Ross of S.W.A.T.S was just on ESPN radio saying that he doesn't understand why the substance is banned, because it is natural or as he put it "God's substance". He says he has helped Lewis before and other athletes (named Favre, Cadillac Williams and others). The guy really is more upset over the NFL banning it than Lewis denying that he used it. When asked why would Lewis deny using the substance the guy said, "I don't know maybe he is scared of Goodell". Ross sounded like a normal guy that just has a business.
