Jets Cut Pace, Scott, J. Smith, & E. Smith

The Jets announced Tuesday that they've released high-priced tackle Jason Smith and high-priced linebackers Calvin Pace and Bart Scott (along with safety Eric Smith). The moves will save the team about $32 million in salary-cap space.

Jason Smith -- who was the No. 2 overall pick in 2009 by St. Louis but didn't start a single game for the Jets last season -- had the biggest cap hit at $12 million, but he was followed closely by Pace at slightly more than $11.5 million and Scott at $8.65 million. Releasing Eric Smith, meanwhile, saves the team $3 million.

Considering New York was $25 million over the 2013 salary-cap limit of about $120 million, these moves were necessary. Clearly, as CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora wrote, Pace and Scott were in danger of becoming cap causalities. Jason Smith, meanwhile, became a non-entity this past season. His NFL career might be in trouble.

Overall, though, the moves on Tuesday have put the Jets in a better financial position (and really shouldn't affect the product on the field too badly, considering Pace's play and the quality of Scott's performance have declined in recent seasons).

Now, if the team could only figure out what to do about Darrelle Revis.
The Jets also released TE Josh Baker.

Just the tip of the iceberg. I expect to see numerous more cuts and trades in order to get this team under the cap and in good enough shape to cut Sanchez after next season.
