This is becoming a more and more prevalent problem in this country. People like you making excuses for a guy that's simply an arrogant dumbass, but are dead set on that they can be "saved"' from a "mental illness" that surely excuses their acts of idiocy because they have no control over it.

This is simplistic IMO. Mental illness isn't a black and white issue. To say he's a complete write-off because you think he is ... is far too simplistic. On the surface, yes he's a loser ... but mental illness is not that easy a nut to crack.
