Fisher: Richardson comes back as our starter

As Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead battle it out for the Rams starting running back spot to see who will replace the departed Steven Jackson, it appears as though the former is a step ahead of the latter.

That's what St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher says he believes thus far.

“I think Daryl comes back as our starter,” Fisher said Tuesday.

Last week, Fisher talked about using a committee of two or three running backs, and he still might have that idea. But for him to talk about Richardson specifically has to lead you to believe that Fisher likes what he sees out of the 2012 seventh-round pick (for the record, Pead was the team's second round pick in 2012).

And that makes sense, because Richardson had success last year, averaging 4.8 yards per carry (475 yards total) and catching 24 passes for another 163 yards while backing up Jackson.

Pead, meanwhile, has struggled in his pro career so far. He's been suspended for the first game of this season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and in the offseason, he called 2012 a “miserable life."

Though he showed plenty of talent at the University of Cincinnati, Pead hasn't done enough to take many reps away from the players ahead of him on the depth chart in St. Louis. Apparently, that now includes Richardson.

“I'm a good quality back, I feel I can do it all, be an every down back,” Richardson said, via Tony Softli.

So far, Fisher seems to agree.

As I said in the NFC West thread, Pead blows until he proves otherwise. Didn't look good even when he played.

Anyway, Richardson is a nice change of pace back, and I hope he runs for a billion yards, but I will go out on a limb and say that somebody not named in this article that very few people have heard of will lead the Rams in rushing. And it won't be a fantasy friendly total.

Rams rushing game looks suspect to say the least. Wouldn't surprise me if Tavon Austin has more rushing yards than Pead.

I was upset after drafting Steven Jackson last year to see the Rams all but neglect him. Richardson did look good at times, but it seemed to me Fisher wasn't a Jackson fan.

The Rams were shopping Jackson and trying to keep him healthy. If you noticed, after the trade deadline they started to give him more touches.

Before the trade deadline, they wouldn't even give him the ball on the goal line, which drove me nuts. It became pretty obvious why a few weeks later.

Just looked it up to confirm.

All of his TD's, three of his four 20+ carry games (and two 19 carry games), and all of his 100+ games were after the trade deadline.
