Oklahoma has made its choice of starting quarterback and will go with a player who has never taken a college snap over a player who saw action in all 13 games last year.
Sooners coach Bob Stoops announced Thursday that redshirt freshman Trevor Knight will start the team's Aug. 31 opener against Louisiana-Monroe.
"Both Trevor and Blake (Bell) have competed hard and both will be ready to play against Louisiana-Monroe," Stoops told reporters. "Like every other position on our team, I expect them both to continue competing for the starting job."
Knight won a competition that went three ways until Kendal Thompson suffered a foot injury earlier this month. Knight may fit the Sooners' desire to go to more of a zone-read offense that requires a fast, mobile passer over Bell's banging style.
Bell, a junior, appeared in all 13 games for the Sooners last season in relief of starter Landry Jones. He rushed for 11 touchdowns and was 9 of 16 passing for 107 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Knight's high school coach David Wetzel told a Tulsa radio station Thursday that knight has "a big-time arm. He has very deceptive speed. He's got great speed in my opinion. He doesn't have the top speed that an RGIII has ... but he's got really good speed.
"He is just a phenomenal atheltes. He konws he has a great body and great athletic ability. He has always been a guy who's worked extremely hard to use that."
Knight threw for 2,092 yards and 27 touchdowns with three interceptions and rushed for 1,050 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior at Reagan High School in San Antonio.
