Aaron Curry retires from football after 4 seasons.

Aaron Curry was supposed to be the can't-miss kid. After just four NFL seasons, the linebacker is out of the league. The first-round draft pick from 2009 said his decision is the best thing for his family.

One of the most disappointing and confounding top-five draft picks of the last decade has decided to retire from the NFL.

Aaron Curry, taken No. 4 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft, announced his retirement via Twitter on Wednesday. He was recently cut by the New York Giants.

"After a lot of prayer. Consulting with God. The best thing for my family and myself is to retire from the @nfl. I enjoyed it #DeliveredDefender," Curry wrote.

The Wake Forest product universally was touted as the "safest" pick in the 2009 draft, proving there is no sure thing. Curry's intelligence and athleticism gave him the look of a plug-and-play starting linebacker.

Former Houston Texans general manager Charley Casserly called Curry the "best linebacker prospect" he'd seen in ten years. The Detroit Lions reportedly considered taking Curry at No. 1 overall.

Curry never played fast at the NFL level, and there were open questions about his desire to be great. His fall from grace is another reminder of how imperfect the draft process can be.

The top five picks that year: Matthew Stafford, Jason Smith, Tyson Jackson, Curry and Mark Sanchez. It's not a great sign that Sanchez is the second-best player in the top five.
I know you guys remember the hype when this gentleman came out of Wake Forest.

I remember wanting my Lions to draft him...thank God we drafted right for once and took Stafford instead.

Honestly on of the biggest busts I can remember. A lot of busts can manage to stick around as backups but this guy literally was useless almost from day 1.

The fact that he couldn't even find a spot in the Giants' linebacking corp is all you need to know.

I remember how excited I was to have Aaron Curry, Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill as our linebacking group. It's a shame all 3 turned into bums.

Lofa just broke down. Guy was a stud early on. Hill wasn't bad

Curry was an absolute waste though. Should never have drank that Kiper kool-aid, I wanted Crabtree and Kiper made me question myself and devout myself to a bum.

Tatupu is the one that confused me the most. He was already there, not sure what caused his fall.

As for Curry, I wanted him too. Though if Charley Casserly says he is a "cant miss" prospect, we all should have run for the hills. Heath Shuler was his "can't miss guy" and look how that turned out. Casserly has a great history of mid to late round finds, but struggled at the top of the draft.

Aaron Curry is the definition of bust...he just straight up couldn't play. Some dudes have outside influences...injuries...drugs...run with the wrong crowd...but there is a special place for the truest of busts...Aaron Curry...the truest of busts. Drafted high and no outside influences effecting potential production...he just could not play.

Aaron Curry is living the American dream. Played in the NFL for a couple years and made $34 million, retired most likely relatively healthy and in his 20's. Fucking a. Genius.
