Quick NFL thoughts from casual fan

*Broncos look to be the class of a weak AFC once again. It was funny listening to the "experts" bemoan the fact that the Broncos were 7.5 pt favorites going in to the game, saying that the Ravens beat them last year and they will be better without Ray Lewis. The Ravens were pretty mediocre last year, got hot at the right time, and then lost a ton of guys in the offseason. I didn't think the Broncos would win so easily, but the AFC looks pretty terrible this year in general.

*Steelers could be on Jacksonville's level in terribleness. They have no skill position players, no playmakers on defense, and are atrocious in the lines. Its Roethlisberger and a bunch of nobodies.

*I am sick of every game involving the Giants and the Cowboys getting blown out of proportion. The Giants always start cold. The Cowboys always beat a few good teams then lose to a bunch of average teams. Its business as usual.

*The Vikings looked anemic against the Lions, who didn't even get much from Calvin Johnson yet still scored 34. How soon until Matt Cassel gets the call?

*Eagles offense has always been explosive, especially if Vick is 100%. That will last about 2 more weeks then the Eagles offense will return to earth. Impressive debut for Chip Kelly, though.

*I don't know if the NFL did this on purpose, but there were a ton of shit matchups in Week 1...Bucs/Jets, Rams/Cards, Jags/KC, Fins/Browns.

*I saw about 15 plays of the Niners-Packers game...and each play was an Anquan Boldin reception. Packers D looks like it will have issues this year.

*I thought Terrell Pryor would completely suck for Oakland...but he did pretty well and is actually like the 3rd leading rusher in the NFL.

*Good Bears: Kept Cutler upright in the 1st half...caused turnovers on D...Bennett caught a TD...Marshall looks great...rookie OLs look serviceable...Cutler had a big play running up the middle, which he should do more of...Bears uncharacteristically came back against a good defense from a deficit in the 2nd half.

*Bad Bears: last year Bears played well in opener then looked miserable...not much on offense in the 1st half...Bears defense looked pretty average, TBH, outside of the turnovers...Dalton pretty much picked apart the Bears...big win for the Bears, but the Bengals did their share in giving the game away "Marvin Lewis style"...

In your opinion who played worst this week, Josh Freeman or Mark Sanchez?

My opinion of week 1 opinions:

It's week 1. None of them mean shit.

I don't recall anybody saying the ravens would be better than last year, don't know where you got that from.

It's a long season, lets wait a few more weeks before comparing the Steelers to the jags. That division looks wide open btw.

Only 2 running backs ran for over 100 yards this weekend. And one of them was Shane Vereen.

Lot of teams looked pretty sloppy. Some looked pretty damn good. I think it will even out as the season goes on.

its hard to make any legit debate on any teams until week 6.....maybe even week 8.

all the games were shit. sloppy, slow, rusty, etc.
3rd & 14, inside your own 15, up 6, 3:20min left to go = call a PA Pass and Cancel. *its Legit, so no needless complaining

Could just be my happenstancing into games at the wrong time....but it seemed like I saw an inordinate amount of late hits and out of bounds shoving.
I think GBs actions maybe put me in a mind state to look for it , but Im starting to get the feeling some teams are looking to physically intimidate outside of the stupid confines the NFL has set. That or they were just playing super sloppy in week 1.
Best reason to have a license.

Carson Palmer is the biggest singular position upgrade in the entire league this season. He's an average QB at this point, but the Cardinals may have had the worst collection of QB's since the merger last season. I believe if the four men who started games for them, only Kolb is still drawing an NFL paycheck. The other three guys, who started 11 games, combined for 3 TD's & 17 INT's.

Palmer sliced & diced a good Rams defense in the first half. The Cards still can't pass protect, or they would have won. The NFC West is a nightmare.

Palmer is average...but he's not a dumb QB and he's capable of just feeding Larry Fitzgerald...which is what the Cardinals need to actually produce on offense. They'll get a token 40-60 yards on the ground from Mendenhall every week to keep defenses honest, but they'll feed Fitzgerald. Roberts and Floyd are good enough to keep the defense from doubling Fitzgerald every time out, too.

I said in the chatberx...but Pryor will be a nice fantasy QB this year...just like when Tebow was the starting QB in Denver who ended up a Top 12 QB every week. Plus, the Raiders will be playing from behind a lot, so I presume he'll have the ball in his hands to make something happen and be given free reign to run most of the year. He just needs to keep the INTs to a minimum.

The Jaguars are the worst team in football. Going over that #BridgeforBridgewater or in that #ClownCarforClowney. Should be terri-bad ride.

I also think what the Eagles are doing is fantastic for the league as a whole. The look completely different from everybody else in the league, which has been a huge problem the last few years in the NFL, with teams lacking identity.

Like Don Coryell, Mouse Davis, Mike Martz, Joe Gibbs, Buddy Ryan, etc Chip Kelly is doing something innovative and completely fresh on his side of the ball, giving the Eagles a distinct identity in a league where nearly every team is interchangeable from a base offense/defense standpoint if you aren't digging into film.

                    oddly;
Shanny successfully introduced Pistol Read/Option into NFL last year and hardly got any "kudos" from NFL sports media.
i wonder if Chip Kelly would have been considered as the Eagles HC; if the Redskins didnt pull that off successfully .....

Did you see how many times they went unbalanced line?

The hurry up, cheese, option offense has been effective in Madden for years, glad the NFL is finally catching up though....

While I agree with the notion that it is a long season, the Steelers offense bordered on unwatchable. I think that their defense is fine to good, with the possibility of being great though.
