It was an interesting Week 2 in the NFL season- a Jacksonville TV station apologized on air for their contractual obligations, the Seahawks asserted their dominance in the NFC by dominating the 49ers, and my Redskins got taken apart once again by a high powered offense.
Robert Griffin III is not healthy. The talk radio stations will be busy in DC this week. People will point to another big second half by RGIII and place blame elsewhere. Fact is, the offense couldn't produce anything during the first half, and left the defense out to dry. For the second week in a row, his only production came in the second half against prevent defenses.
His speed and acceleration is not where it was, the deep ball isn't being thrown, and his passes look like throws, without any lower-body movement. At this point, it would be better to put Cousins in to win ballgames, but the Redskins with RGIII can afford to wait a season to gain cap space back and give him this season to get his legs back under him. St Louis can probably thank the Redskins for a top 10-12 draft pick.
Jacksonville television station WKMG had to issue an on-air apology for being contractually obligated to show the Jaguars away games instead of the Manning Bowl. More proof that the Jags are likely to be moved very soon. Coming from an area where we have very passionate fans for both the Ravens and Redskins, we would never have that happen.
The Seattle Seahawks are my new favorite for the NFC representative in the Super Bowl. They forced four turnovers off Colin Kaepernick, and limited the Niners to barely over 200 yards of total offense. They demonstrated that they can run the ball with authority, and are a physical matchup with just about anyone. Richard Sherman also dominated Anquan Boldin, limiting him to just one reception for seven yards.
When you have a team in this day in the NFL that can dominate in man coverage on defense, and can use extra players to bring pressure because of it, your defense is going to be hard to beat. Add in the huge homefield advantage that Seattle has (though I do have to shake my head at whatever happened before kickoff) they are going to be the team to beat.
For as much as the NFL is trying to limit helmet-to-helmet hits, two safeties went down yesterday- Eric Reid and Brandon Meriweather, and Meriweather also knocked out Eddie Lacy on his first carry of the game with another helmet-to-helmet hit. I am not sure where the league goes from here, but if they are serious about limiting head injuries, some sort of response should be in order.
Going back to the Green Bay game, their offense completely dominated the Redskins defense. Some early QB pressure was no problem for Aaron Rodgers, who threw for 480 yards and James Starks added 144 yards on the ground to completely embarrass the Redskins defense. They have so many offensive weapons, it is almost impossible to stop them.
How many kicks does it take to win a game? Texans kicker Randy Bullock missed three, including a potential game-winner at the end after making it three times, called off by a timeout, penalty and a timeout. But at least those watching the game got to see two very good catches by rookie Deandre Hopkins to win the game for Houston in overtime.
EJ Manuel continues to impress. He went head-to-head against Tom Brady and the Patriots last week, and his team nearly won. This week, he led a drive downfield to win the game, using both his arm and legs to get them in position to win. In no way am I saying Manuel is an elite QB right now, but he is certainly giving a case against the doubters who said he was going to be a project for the Bills- he looks in control of this offense right now.
The Manning Bowl should probably deserve a higher mention here, but not after a 41-23 Denver win, where Peyton once again did not take off until the second half, and Eli threw four interceptions, and the Giants now have 10 turnovers through two games. Tom Coughlin has to be livid at this point. Also, very nice to see a good game from a former UGA alum, as Knowshon Moreno rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns. I hope he can stay healthy for Denver.
After being under fire the entire week in the Tampa Bay media, one would think Josh Freeman would come out and put together a great game and silence the doubters. However, a report surfaced before the game that Freeman was going to request a trade, and he only made the critics louder, throwing for only 125 yards on 9/22 attempts, with a TD and interception. To put that yardage total in perspective, Doug Martin outgained Freeman with 144 yards rushing. Absolutely terrible.
I was wrong about the Eagles offense. Desean Jackson leads receivers with 297 yards and Lesean McCoy leads rushers with 237 yards. I doubted both of them and the Eagles offense heading into the season, but I've been proved wrong on this account. If the Eagles can put together some semblance of a defense, and can keep opposing teams from figuring out their plans, they are a playoff team. Oh, and they have to fix their protection schemes to keep Vick healthy and upright.
Quick Thoughts:
With Ray Rice going down with a hip injury, expect Bernard Pierce to be the hot fantasy pickup this week.
It is only Week 2, but Ryan Tannehill is the best QB from last year's draft class on paper. We'll have to wait and see if his performance stays like this, but I also wouldn't bet against Andrew Luck and RGIII improving over the start of the year.
How long until Ben Tate gets more carries than Arian Foster? I know Foster is hurting, but Tate is running much better than his teammate.
Tavon Austin did not put up great yardage totals, but he scored two touchdowns and the Rams got him the ball and got him involved.
Same old story occurring in Dallas. As a Redskins fan, I love it, even though they can probably beat us right now. Romo being Romo, abandoning the run and losing a very winnable game. They really should have started over this past off-season- and yes, I know most Dallas fans disagreed with me about that here last season.
