Trent Richardson to Colts

Not sure why some of you are laughing at Cleveland, the Browns did great here to get a #1 for a RB who isn't anything special. I've been preaching for the last few years that RB's are largely "plug & play" these days, so grabbing a #1 for one is a smart move for a team that is DYING for a QB. Now, with two 1's, two 3's, and two 4's, this team has massive flexibility in the draft. They can trade up if they fall in love with a QB, trade down and stockpile even more, or just sit tight and grab seven useful players.

I can see why the Colts moved on this as well. It's not something I would have done, because like larry i'm not giving up a #1 for a RB unless it's a special player or dire situation, and this was neither.

I think its kind of funny that it was Mike Lombardi after the draft that criticized Cleveland for taking Richardson-Weeden and suggested he'd rather take Tannehill-Doug Martin at Cleveland's respective spots. The trade of Richardson now is pretty telling in that regard.

couldnt agree more. just a terrible group of front office decisions from day 1. They jumped at the chance to start Hoyer and i know they would trade weeden if they thought they could get anything. They are probably telling Hoyer behind the scenes to please play well so they can dump weeden.

Norv Turner runs a Vertical Offense. So yes, Richardson doesn't fit that offense.

clearly nobody on VSN watches the Browns....understandable....but Trent Richardson sucks.

he dances around in the backfield looking for the hole and then gets swarmed. Luckily he has the power to get swarmed and still gain a few yards. He can run very well when there is a hole. But 9 our of 10 times he doesnt see the hole and jukes east and west. this isnt NCAA where you can expect 3 yard holes everytime. Or run E/W and think you will out run the defense for yards.

Holmgren was a cunt for drafting this guy in the first place. moving up to #3 to take a RB in todays NFL? talk about a moronic move. How he ever had a front office job is baffling. This current group is trying to salvage what they can for him.

Sure getting a 1st rounder before week 3 is going to hurt the team bigtime. But i think these guys are smart enough to know the browns are at best a 7-9 team. Why take the chance on another sub par season or worse, an injury and get no value for him. The days of building a team around the RB are dead. This is a passing league and i think the Browns did a great job getting great return on a bust of a pick.

Great post. I agree 100%. Richardson is a name, but Richardson's contribution can be duplicated, as he is a good runningback, but nothing great. It will be interesting to see what they do with these picks. I wonder if they will draft a QB or try and get Kurt Cousins or something. I happen to think Cousins might be the best move, so as long as the Redskins don't overvalue him.

This reminds me of the Vontae Davis trade last year with Miami. The front office's strategy being that Trading the 2nd round pick for Davis was somewhat similar to Indianapolis just "Drafting" Davis, and that the value gained is that Indy could not have found a corner in the draft with Davis' talent in the 2nd round. Grigson's mindset here is that Indianapolis is basically "Drafting" Richardson and banking on the idea that the potential of him being an elite RB is legitimate. Indy is usually not in a position to draft a RB of this guy's caliber coming out of college because usually Indianapolis is drafting in the bottom part of the round.

I don't know if Richardson is going to be as successful as he was in Cleveland though. On on hand Indianapolis does have more skill weapons, on the other, the Offensive Line in Indianapolis really lacks talent and is already beginning to play musical chairs at the guard position. This is a move for the future though so the burden of responsibility is on Grigson here to make sure the offensive line gets better over time. Some Colt fans want to say this is us getting the next Edgerrin James, but I don't even know if Edgerrin James could have been "The Edge" running behind Indy's line.

For the Colts though, it's attractive because Richardson still has plenty of talent and should be able to plug in nicely to an offense where he won't be relied on as the main option.

I think it is a pretty obvious move for Cleveland...and, to be fair, they got good value for him. Considering this wasn't a Lombardi pick (he even criticized it during the draft)...I understand moving him and thought they got good value.

For Indy...I think Richardson is talented, but he's been a bit JAGgy so far...it didn't help Cleveland was not a place to be productive. I think it is a 'wait and see' by Indy...I do think the price was a bit high for a running back. I mean, why didn't they just sign McGahee and kept the first rounder? We'll see if this helps them make a jump come playoff time.

Strangely, I have mixed feelings on Brandon Weeden. When he came out, I thought an appropriate comparison for him was a middle class Carson Palmer. And funny enough, he's kind of like Carson Palmer...just the 29 year old version of Carson Palmer, without having a history in the NFL of success. Maybe in another universe, Brandon Weeden takes a traditional route to play football can succeed. I don't think he's a bum, but I think he's too old to wait around to develop and he's capped at a bottom 1/3rd of the league starting QB.

Now the front office has to get it done, that's where I think many Cleveland fans are biting their nails even more. They aren't one of those orgs that have drafted well.

So true! They are also startng the 3rd string Qb over Jason Campbell, They even announced when Weeden gets healthy they still might not put him back in as starter. I think they Want to change the browns to a pass heavy offence and draft Boyd or Bridgewater. Now we sit and watch who has the worst season Browns or Jags aha ..
