About 36 hours late on this, but I've had a busy week on this one.
It's been discussed some, but Thursday Night Football is proving to be a waste. Short weeks for many teams, leads to unprepared teams and a poor football game. However, the NFL thinks people need "More Football!" so we get Thursday night games on the NFL Network.
We're also coming up on the first of two games to be held in London this season. Who cares? I know the NFL wants to expose themselves internationally, but this puts two teams at a distinct disadvantage because of traveling. It's going to get worse, as some are projection an NFL team will be permanently in London by the end of this decade. Take a vote of the players, and I guarantee you almost all of them won't want to make the travel every week, much less relocate there for the entire season.
The NFC East may be the worst division in the league. The Redskins and Giants are both 0-3, with a slew of problems. The Redskins defense has struggled to contain opponents offenses, but they've also played three of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. RGIII is still not 100%, and is a huge reason the offense struggling to sustain drives.
Meanwhile, the Giants are just awful, not protecting the ball and not producing on offense. They have so many weapons to support Eli Manning, and they've been silenced. Their front four, at one point one of the best in football, is struggling to generate pressure on opposing QBs, with only three sacks so far this season. To put that into perspective, there are currently 20 players in the NFL that have 3 or more sacks.
The Eagles offense under Chip Kelly could be the real deal, but they need to develop a defense to support them. The Cowboys look to be the team to beat, but anywhere from a 7-9 to 9-7 season could likely take the division. So Tony Romo can be Tony Romo and it may not hurt them until they get into the post-season.
Many people are calling the Seahawks early favorites, and I certainly agree, but the Saints have really impressed me. Their defense, a weakness not just last year but in years past, is now a huge strength. They are only allowing 188 yards a game, and fourth in the league by allowing only 12.7 points a game. They still have one of the more dominant offensive units in the game led by Drew Brees, who can move them up and down the field at will, and Jimmy Graham is one of the best players to create mismatches with.
Ryan Tannehill showed some poise in leading the Dolphins to victory over the Falcons, beating them with a TD on a drive in the final minutes. He is having the best showing of the sophomore QBs, and is only going to improve, especially with the weapons he has to work with. The Dolphins defense also held the Falcons in check despite missing several key players.
Houston lost to the Ravens 30-9, and their offense is struggling. Andre Johnson was limited, and was quickly shut down by the Ravens secondary. Arian Foster is not his usual self, and while Ben Tate is putting up solid numbers, they are missing the explosiveness that Foster brings to the table. Fantasy football owners are also missing that.
It's time to begin the rebuild in Pittsburgh. With what Mike Tomlin has done, he deserves to stay on board and see it through, and given their history, the Rooney family will likely allow that. They have the oldest defense in the league, and offensively, they've gotten away from what they've always done best- power football. The offensive line looks like what used to protect Jay Cutler up until this year, and even if they had Pouncey, the line would still be bad.
Quick thoughts:
-Detroit beat the Redskins with players not named Calvin Johnson. Their depth on offense is pretty substantial, and they also did it without Reggie Bush.
-The Cardinals are designing a foam finger specifically for Rashad Johnson. Bravo.
-Jordan Cameron came up big for the Browns with three TD catches. Also big for my fantasy team and many others.
-The Jaguars continue their inexorable march to 0-16, being thrashed 45-17 by the Seahawks.
-The Jets held on to win 27-20 against the Bills despite being penalized 20 times for 168 yards. I don't know what is worse, having that many penalties or the Bills not being able to win.
-Josh Freeman did nothing to support his cause in TB, and certainly not for a trade. The Bucs were outmanned against the Pats.
-Adam Jones was arrested again.
-Jacoby Jones was arrested after being hit on the head by a stripper with a bottle. The organizer of this "party" was Bryant McKinnie, of the "Love Boat" affair. Some folks never change.
