2014 Season will hold 3 London Games

To meet increased demand in the United Kingdom, the NFL announced Tuesday that a third game will be added to the London schedule in 2014. Is your team going overseas next year?

The NFL announced Tuesday that a third regular-season game will be added to the London schedule for the 2014 season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Oakland Raiders each will play one home game at Wembley Stadium next year.

It's no coincidence that all three franchises are dissatisfied with their current stadium situations.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan just kicked in $20 million of his own money for improvements to EverBank Field. The Falcons recently chose a spot just south of the Georgia Dome for their new $1 billion stadium. Looking to replace the Coliseum, Raiders are scouting land in Concord.

The dates of the games and opponents for each club will be announced later this season.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell pointed to the increased popularity of the International Series as the reason for the addition of a third game.

"Our fans in the UK have continued to demonstrate that they love football and want more," Goodell said. "Both of this year's games in London sold out quickly. The fan enthusiasm for our sport continues to grow. By playing two games in the UK this year, we are creating more fans. We hope that with three games in London next year we will attract even more people to our game."

The Minnesota Vikings' 34-27 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4 drew a crowd of more than 83,000 to Wembley.

More impressively, roughly 520,000 attended a football festival on London's famed Regent Street the day before the game. Around The League's London correspondent, Henry Hodgson, counted jerseys of all 32 NFL teams on the scene.

Evidence of the NFL's growing popularity can be seen in British-born Menelik Watson, Jack Crawford and Lawrence Okoye all entering the league in the past two years.

As long as the United Kingdom continues to support the NFL experience, the league will welcome the opportunity to grow its brand.
    Gonna lose a home game

Why can't they make the good teams lose home games. Raiders and Jags will lose home games?

Put a team there. If it works to have a London team in any of the big 3 sports, it's the NFL. That week between games makes it possible to have 8 away games there per season. The biggest downfalls are time zone difference and the difficulty of following your team there for away games. It would also suck for a team if they had to play an away game on Thursday if it wasn't after a BYE, but they can just schedule things so thatit doesn't happen that way.

NFL teams should do this if they play in London.

every time they get to about the 20 yard line or closer, they immediately send out the field goal unit and score that way. It will cause Europeans to be more interested in the sport.

I did notice during the Vikings - Steelers game that when one team missed a field goal that the crowd got louder then they do in America. Kicking is an art form they appreciate and missing a field goal is a sin to them

Aso's idiocy aside, these London games are ridiculously stupid.

I know London is massive, but I'm surprised they don't look at moving it around the UK. Wembley is massive and the 'centre' of British sports, but I think a game in Manchester or Edinburgh would be equally as big. People travel down from those places anyway. Perhaps the European influx is greater than I imagine as well

A full time team in London would work from a scheduling standpoint because between bye weeks, Thursday games, and Monday games the league could conceivably make sure nobody gets screwed with ridiculous travel demands.

The biggest issue, is the free agency/coaching/staffing disadvantage the London team would face. A lot of guys, all things being equal,, are not going to want to live in Europe.

I think a potential London team would have to maybe have a unique schedule where they have four game clusters home & away, allowing players to continue to live in America.

Logistically it's a mess, but it could work if the league was dead set on doing it. Which eventually they will be.

why london though, WHy not Canada? Is the CFL the only reason why we dont have a team there? A Toronto team would be great IMO.

They want what the NBA has. Worldwide appeal.

NBA has that without an European team though.

Reason why NBA has worldwide appeal is beause its a simple game to play and cheap. In 3rd countires all you really need is a ball of sorts, they can make baskets out of anything and who needs asphalt, dirt will do if needed. Football is a completely different animal. So much gear, so many rules, and more importantly so many players needed. How do you 1 on 1 in football? every sport you can go one on one. Unless you are doing line drills or tackling which isnt the glamorous part about the sport, you need at least 3 people.

I know there are obviously fans of the NFL in Europe, but it's not an easy game to follow here. Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football are basically out because they start at like 2 AM British Time (later if you move to the continent). The Sunday 1 PM kickoffs aren't bad, as they start at 6 PM here so I kick back and watch the Bengals with dinner. If you're really dedicated, you do the 4 PM kickoff (9 PM here) and go to bed at midnight on a Sunday.

Putting a team in the UK might be doable, but I just don't know how you grow the sport. Where basketball has the Euroleague to create homegrown stars (i.e. the Gasols/Rubio/etc) that then go to the NBA, the NFL has nothing like it. NFL Europe was a sinkhole.

English people already complain if their local football (soccer) team has too many bloody foreigners on it. I really don't see them shelling out massive money, 8 weeks a year, to see a team of foreigners play a foreign game in Wembley. Especially if that team is a loser like the Jaguars. Londoners already have their choice of Arsenal/Spurs/Chelsea (for good teams) and Fulham/West Ham/Leyton/Charlton/Millwall/Whatever to suck their money (look at this map and see how many are in London - http://www.myfootygrounds.co.uk/Area...p?view=ENGLAND). And for the most part, those tickets aren't cheap. Arsenal has the highest season ticket prices in the EPL and holds 60000 people. Those 60,000 people are going to struggle to pay for two season tickets and I doubt you'll find many who give up Arsenal for the London Jaguars.

I'm fairly certain basketball is far and away more popular in Europe.
