I like baseball but gooby is a mitt fucking dumb ass.

Baseball doesn't even compare to football in terms of public or media attention.

The Red Sox will win tomorrow and ESPN will try their hardest to make it the biggest deal ever but nobody outside of Boston will give a shit and even Red Sox fans themselves will forget by the time the Patriots and Steelers kick off.

Baseball simply does not have the allure or national interest that football does. Compare the Super Bowl to game 1 of the World Series.

The difference is that more people find football entertaining when their team isn't involved than they do in baseball.

Baseball is a terrific live experience.. Far better than attending an NFL game.

But the schedule length and amount of teams has caused it to become largely regional and the fans drop off as their teams do. It's too hard to watch all the games, plain and simple.

The NFL schedule is compact, the games have a finite (for the most part) run time and there's so semblance of hope for every team for at least a few weeks every season (enough to whet their appetite and get them to join a fantasy league). It's made for national television.

I enjoy both sports but I've never completely stopped following the NFL when the Broncos fall out of contention the way I do with the Angels. The numbers would lead me to conclude I'm not the only one.

Sportscenter doesn't even lead with the World Series when the NFL is being played. Baseball is an antiquated, over-saturated game that doesn't translate well to television. It probably won't lose anymore popularity than it has over the last few decades, there will always be the diehards, but there's basically no middle ground between them and the people who only follow their local team.

I would even argue that the NFL is the worst live sport, let alone worse than just MLB. The NFL makes for a good time, the tailgate, the party, etc....but the 3 hours of actual game? Meh.

NFL games matter, all of them, every score matters greatly. MLB, games have much smaller impact on the grand scheme, teams score like 500 times, who cares. Football is a treat, you only get it for a short period of time and it's mainly once a week. People get excited for every Sunday, nobody gets excited for a "baseball day" other than opening day. Unless you're some fat cretin recluse who loves statistics (see chatbox from 11AM to 4PM for examples), you have better things to do than give a shit about the useless details of the MLB.

When the Patriots are done, or not looking in form for a title, I'll watch the NFL for other storylines or reasons. Unless the Blue Jays are 5+ games over .500, I'm not watching because there's no point. (Thus I haven't really watched baseball in 20 years...)

I agree the example of a RG was weird but I think if you limited it to skill position players dave has a solid point.

An NFL football game is the worst sport to see live.

Baseball is fun especially for the drunk sloots.

Hockey is the best. Everyone is having a great time.

Basketball if you like people watching. Nothing like a 90's rap song or Laffy Taffy to get the crowd going.

Right, but dave being dave, even when he's on the correct side of things he screws up the point.

I missed this thread until now. I'm a little sad. I liked the idea of the poll in the Soapbox about Baseball vs. Football being purely a random creepy drunk dave thread.

Can't disagree with any of any of this, but what is your point here? That you like baseball? Nobody gives a shit.

I like hockey. I think it's far more entertaining live than football or baseball. I'm not going to sit here and try to defend it or make people like it if they don't.

I was pointing out reasoning as to why NFL fans are more prone to stay up to date with the league even as their team is knocked out of contention, which is why I bolded what I did.

I used my own personal experiences for flavor.
