Nnamdi Asoughma - what the hell happened?

As a Philadelphia Eagles' fan, I am obviously bitter and perplexed.
Now I see the Niners might be close to releasing him.

Maybe Oakland fans can answer this one - what the hell happened to Nnamdi Asoughma?

He seems like a good person, not the Albert Haynesworth type. How did he go from arguably the best corner in the NFL to being cut in three years???

He just knocked up Kerry Washington. Who needs football?

I fully expected that answer. LOL. She looked amazing in The Last King of Scotland.

Maybe being "arguably the best corner in the NFL" isn't worth a whole lot in the modern era.

He got old. Like most do.

He is taller and lankier, he got less agile, lost speed and quickness, and his hips tightened up.

This day and age that ain't gonna cut it.

Let's see how good Richard Sherman is in 7 years.

There are very few Deion's, champs, and Darrel greens. Big corners will slow down come year 10.

On the other hand, Charles Woodson has been an inspiration at Safety for the Raiders this season. Not nearly as good as he used to be but he is a pro.

He got thrown at like 20 times a season sometimes in Oakland. Maybe it's hard to determine how good someone is when you get thrown at 1-2 times a game. He automatically got dubbed shutdown and one of the best. I think he may have been overrated to a certain point. I do think at one point he was one of the best mostly from 06-08 but him switching to RCB full time was stupid. If he's that damn good then why underutilize him like that especially when you play predominantly man coverage you can't make him shadow #1's or at the very least keep him on the side that right handed QB's throw more often to.

I wonder if a move to safety would be good for Asoughma.

Firstly, the way the Raiders used Asomugha on the boundary in press-man coverage. That is where he excelled. It is what made him an All-Pro and what made him an eventual Hall of Famer. Teams never threw his way...ever. Some of that is because Oakland had a Motley Crew of bums playing on the opposite side of him that were targeted on the regular. But, still, no one in football was even CLOSE to as good as Asomugha during his best years. They never threw his way, and even when they did, QBs were rarely successful. He had a stretch where he went over three years with giving up ONE touchdown.

Then, he signs with Philly...they take the best press-man corner in football...and what do they do? They put him in zone and move him around. LOL. They just paid millions for a press-man corner and they want to use him in zones and move him around. NFL teams knew the book on Aso...and once they saw what Philly was doing with him, they picked on him immediately and never relented. He went from GOAT worthy to BUM very quickly. They attempted to get back on track early in 2012, but by that point they were a mess and Asomugha hit the wall physically. He's old and he's slow.

I have little doubt that if he had stayed in Oakland, he'd still be considered a strong corner today...definitely not GOOD, but great corners can hang around a long time as long as they are being used in a way that promotes their best abilities. Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson, and Ronde Barber played for eons but always were put into a position to succeed. After Aso left Oakland, he left a place that knew how to use him.

                  That's pretty much it.

And let that be the end of threads about Nnamdi Asomugha.

I could have sworn this is the 2nd or 3rd one you alone have made of him, Dave. And you seem to have somewhat of an obsession over his wife, too.

Stay creepy, dave, stay creepy. :creeper:

Another point is the Raiders run defense those years were so horrible people rarely threw the ball at all. If they did it was to the other side. He was the GOAT of corners at one time even if he might of been a bit overhyped.

I would say that scheme has a lot to do with it, like Larry said, but it also has to do with CB play changing dramatically since then. Ty Law was considered one of the best when NE was winning Super Bowls, then dropped off quickly then Illegal Contact got enforced more often. It isn't because he got worse, it is because his style of playing physical was no longer viable.
