Texas recruits itself. However, its kind of gotten into Country Club mode. They typically get strong recruits and classes, unfortunately, they kind of flame out. Along the lines and at QB have been the spots Mack has struggled with.

I think Mack would have had a better year this year if he canned Manny Diaz last year. 10-2 looks a lot better than 8-4. I don't believe Texas would have lost the BYU and Ole Miss games early on...those two losses put Mack Brown in the outhouse. He didn't do enough throughout the rest of the season.

Where have yall been? Last week there were reports of Saban accepting the Texas job.

Apparently they are offering 10M/year and a cut of the Longhorn Network.

      He gone imo

That is insane for a coach at any level in any sport. I can't believe sports are getting to be like this.

Been listening to all of the sports talk radio down here today, and they have been bringing up some great points about how the bottom line dollar might not even be what sways Saban. Texas can offer a lot of other benefits that Alabama simply can't.

They're definitely going to make him say no.

The fact that RGIII and Johnny Manziel both told Mack Brown to his face that they wanted to be the QB for the Longhorns and he passed them up in favor for colossal failures like Garrett Gilbert will never be forgotten in Austin.

You aren't lying, but at the same time, its not as simple as that.

I do find it funny, Baylor, over a two year recruiting period signed three very good quarterbacks. Robert Griffin, Nick Florence, and Bryce Petty, all from Texas. In the same two year period, Texas skipped on QBs and then took Garrett Gilbert. Now, I don't think Gilbert was a huge failure. His senior year at SMU is going to be better than anything Case McCoy or David Ash could give you, but, I understand your point.

Under the radar in all of the talk about Mack Brown's demise...recruiting and coaching up of the lines. Yeah, Jackson Jeffcoat became an awesome player and Trey Hopkins and Donald Hawkins also came around as seniors, the play on the lines, overall, not that good. Forget not recruiting RGIII and Johnny Football, busts along the lines like Reggie Wilson, Taylor Bible, Ashton Jeffrey...also, guys like Mason Walters, a nice player, but never lived up to the billing. Nevermind the star-hyped busts ...Mack recently never got the roster filler types either...the tier three types he got never really contributed. You ended up with a roster of stars (Jeffcoat, Okafor, Hicks, Davis) and bums.

Also, as Mack tried to "get with the times"...hiring Manny Diaz was a HUGE flop for Texas. In a time when Texas needed results badly, Diaz was a complete failure and was one of the bigger nails in the coffin of Mack Brown.

Also, offense has simply taken a dive off the deep end. Once one of the top O's in the country back in the late 2000's, Texas has become a mediocre unit offensively. The last year of Greg Davis (offense dropped into the 50s in his last two years, a justifiable firing, IMO), but replacing them with Bryan Harsin and Major Applewhite didn't yield any improvement. Harsin wisely moved on, but sticking with Applewhite, who fields a worse offense then Davis, is another problem of Mack.

He tried to go young with the coordinators and it didn't work. Going back to Robinson mid-season probably almost saved his job.

That's the issue with filling your class up on Junior Day 15 months out from NSD. Texas was star-chasing but missing out on those late riser types who hit the radar their senior year and would always be looking out of state by that point. Can't find developmental guys when you're letting Rivals do your recruiting each year.

I can't truly fault Mack...that method worked for him for years...probably the Team of the 2000's with that method. Unfortunately, times change and sooner or later, you need to alter your strategy, at least a little bit.

Also, in recent years, "the best" of Texas, hasn't been a lock to go to Texas. Baylor, aTm, Bama, as well as some other poachers got all up in that top Texas talent.

The talent has to go somewhere. As discussed in other threads recently, it's all a cycle.

Texas just simply sorts the recruits by interest level and picks out the recruits that list them as 1st.

At some point you have to try and beat some other schools for players.

A lot of the eastern TX talent has been coming to LSU under Saban and Miles

Mack Brown using that NCAA13 strat.
