Jesus christ, thanks for reaffirming why I think most NFL fans are complete morons.

It's a god damn illegal hit by the rules of the NFL. It's clearly and obviously stated as such.

I cant keep up with the saftey rules, so my statement has nothing to do with this rule its self.

my major issue here is the lack of thought given to root cause and effect, Rookie QB are pushed on to the field far to soon and throw receivers into dangerous situations and we fine the DBs. almost any contact is made by a DB is flagged and we limit the ways they can knock a ball loose, bigger and stronger QBs are drafted to extend the play and we limit the ways a Defensive player can bring them down.

then there are hypocrites like you can not tackle a man by his horse collar because that motion is unsafe, but you can bring him down by his long hair in the same motion because we want a uniform image.

feels like a shit load of band aids and things today are no better then they were

Exactly. The NFL has already come out and said it was an illegal hit. Yes, the punter is in the field of play. Yes, he has an opportunity to make a play (though highly improbable). Those points are great and all, but they ignore the rules. The punter is a defense-less player, and they may not LEAD with the crown of their helmet. Helmet-to-helmet does not matter here, it's just leading with the helmet.

Either way, there is no need to knock the punter out like this. We all know it, everyone just wants to be the macho guy to say "Oh the NFL is for pussies these days".

This isn't the first time someone has been blindsided in the nfl, but I never saw this much of a fuss about it before.

I don't believe positions should get better treatment in situations like this. You should be allowed to (legally) block anyone on the field that is trying to prevent your team from scoring however you see fit.

I think the rule is stupid and I don't agree with it at all. Everyone loved it when Pat McAfee laid out trindon Holliday and now everyone is crying when the punter gets laid out. You can't have it both ways.

And how is a punter defenseless when he is running down field making tackles? I get right after the punt he is defenseless, but once he gets his feet and starts chasing the ball he is no longer defenseless.

Lol @ Dave, "if this is a kicker like David Akers I get it cuz he makes tackles." Like this guy was running through that thought process on a punt return, the fastest and most chaotic play in all of football.

              You are.

              This block wasn't legal.

So does anyone want to verify this?

We have people in here saying to different things and I am far too lazy to scour the NFL rulebook myself.

Step one was it was not legal because he was a punter,

Step two i believe the nfl has come out and stated it was an illegal block ...

Ok if it's a legal block because of the nature of the block and nothing else I'm fine.

Immunity from contact for players based on their position remains an asinine concept.

Clearly. Post #15, story from CBSSports.com, quoting the rule book word for word:

"It is a foul if a player initiates unnecessary contact against a player who is in a defenseless posture...including a kicker/punter during the kick or during the return."

"Forcibly hitting the defenseless player's head or neck area with the helmet, facemask, forearm, or shoulder, even if the initial contact of the defender's helmet or facemask is lower than the passer's neck and regardless of whether the defensive player also uses his arms to tackle the defenseless player by encircling or grasping him"

So then the kicker/punter should get the ball off and jog off the field. The punter was clearly eyeing the ball carrier to make a play.

You restating the entire rule doesn't make it any less dumb.

I honestly don't care. I just find the outrage funny. Dude broke a rule and hurt someone, normal people wouldn't defend this type of behavior but most NFL fans aren't normal people.

I get your idea that the rule is stupid and sure, it might be, I'm not going to argue that or care to, it's a bloodsport but regardless the "BAAH, WHAT A PUSSY.... CLEAN HIT IN MY BOOK" crowd is stunningly stupid.
